The Crushed Grape

Zolla Primitivo di Manduria 2020 Magnum

Regular price £34.99

A generous and charismatic Primitivo di Manduria in magnum format, with rich dark fruit, warm spice, and velvety texture. Powerful, expressive, and wonderfully age-worthy.

Hailing from the sun-drenched vineyards of Manduria in southern Italy’s Puglia region, This wine embodies the full-bodied generosity and vibrant character of Italy’s iconic Primitivo grape. This wine celebrates the ancient traditions of the region, where warm Mediterranean breezes and limestone-rich soils nurture vines that produce intensely ripe and expressive fruit.

Made from 100% Primitivo grapes, genetically identical to the American Zinfandel grape but expresses its terroir differently in Italy’s warmer Mediterranean climate.

Deep black cherry, blackberry, and ripe plum lead the profile, underpinned by bramble and juicy blackcurrant. Warm spice accents of cinnamon, clove, and white pepper add complexity, while gentle hints of dried herbs and mocha from oak maturation provide subtle depth. The finish is long, plush, and persistent, with lingering fruit and spice layers.

Perfect for pairing with grilled lamb, hearty pasta dishes, and aged cheeses, offering both immediate pleasure and the potential for graceful evolution over the next several years.

Description

Zolla Primitivo di Manduria 2020 Magnum hails from the celebrated Primitivo di Manduria DOC in Puglia, the sun-drenched “heel” of Italy’s boot. This classic southern Italian region is acclaimed for producing bold, fruit-rich wines from Primitivo, a grape variety prized for its intense concentration, lush character, and spicy, Mediterranean personality.

Primitivo thrives in Manduria’s hot, arid climate and limestone-rich soils, where abundant sunshine and cooling coastal influences create ripe, expressive fruit with natural acidity and structure. The 2020 vintage delivered excellent phenolic ripeness and depth - ideal for crafting wines that marry generosity with balance.

Produced by a respected Puglian estate focused on authentic regional expression, this magnum edition benefits from larger bottle format evolution, which promotes slower, more even maturation. This allows tertiary complexity to develop gracefully, enhancing both richness and finesse.

Style

A dry, full-bodied southern Italian red with dense blackberry fruit, sweet spice, and velvety texture. The warm Puglian climate gives the wine richness and generosity, while the magnum format adds extra presence and ageing potential.

In simple terms: a bold and luxurious Italian red — rich, smooth, and crowd-pleasing, ideal for sharing over large meals or celebrations.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with violet hues and rich saturation.
  • Nose: Pronounced aromas of black cherry, blackberry, ripe plum, and bramble with warm spice and hints of dried Mediterranean herbs.
  • Palate: Generous and powerful dark fruit core balanced with warm baking spice, mocha, and subtle savoury undertones.
  • Texture: Velvety and opulent tannins with balanced acidity that gives lift and cohesion.
  • Finish: Long, plush, and persistent with lingering rich fruit and spice.
  • Overall Impression: A bold and expressive Mediterranean red that beautifully showcases the concentrated character and refined structure of Primitivo di Manduria, elevated by the magnum format’s balanced evolution.
  • Grilled Ribeye or Tomahawk – Rich, charred flavours complement the wine’s depth and structure.
  • Slow-Braised Lamb Shank – Herbal roast lamb enhances the warm spice and ripe fruit character.
  • Braised Beef Cheeks – The dense, savoury profile matches the wine’s plush texture.
  • Tomato-Based Ragù – Acidity balances richness while amplifying spice layers.
  • Aged Pecorino & Hard Cheeses – Salty, nutty cheeses elevate fruit complexity and soften the tannic grip.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to allow its depth, spice, and aromatic layers to fully emerge.
  • A decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended to encourage aeration, soften the lush tannins, and open the rich bouquet.
  • Use a large-bowl red wine glass to maximise aeration and showcase layered depth and aromatic complexity.
  • Magnum bottles evolve more slowly and evenly, meaning this vintage will continue to develop additional nuance and balance over 6–10 years when stored in cool, stable conditions
