Description

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2021 comes from the heart of Chianti Classico, a region steeped in winemaking history and defined by rolling hills, calcareous clay and galestro soils, and significant diurnal temperature variation. These conditions foster Sangiovese grapes with both ripeness and vibrant natural acidity - the defining elements of classic Chianti Classico style.

Produced by Fontodi, one of the most respected estates in Tuscany, this wine reflects the estate’s unwavering commitment to quality, organic viticulture, and terroir expression. Fontodi’s vineyards are concentrated around the iconic Flaccianello plateau in the village of Panzano, a site renowned for producing concentrated, structured Sangiovese with longevity and depth.

The 2021 vintage exhibits both immediate appeal and the promise of aging, crafted with precision to showcase the pure character of Sangiovese while respecting the nuanced influence of the estate’s unique soils and microclimate.

Style

A dry, structured Sangiovese with concentrated red fruit, mineral depth, and polished tannins. Compared with lighter Chianti styles, it has more intensity and ageing potential, while still retaining freshness and precision.

In simple terms: a serious and powerful Chianti Classico — rich enough for collectors, but balanced enough to remain elegant and food-friendly.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with vivid clarity and youthful intensity.
  • Nose: Concentrated aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, and wild berry layered with violet, dried Mediterranean herbs, and subtle tobacco.
  • Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with vibrant dark cherry and redcurrant fruit framed by savoury spice, black tea, and a touch of earthy minerality.
  • Texture: Firm yet polished tannins supported by lively acidity, creating structure, tension, and balance.
  • Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering red fruit, fine spice, and a refined mineral lift.
  • Overall Impression: A structured and terroir-driven Sangiovese from Chianti Classico, combining depth, elegance, and impressive aging potential.
  • Bistecca alla Fiorentina – The wine’s structure and tannins perfectly complement rich, grilled steak.
  • Wild Boar Ragu – Hearty, savoury meat sauces echo the wine’s aromatic depth and spice.
  • Herb-Roast Pork – Balanced acidity cuts through richness while harmonising with herbal notes.
  • Mushroom and Truffle Dishes – Earthy flavours align with the wine’s depth and mineral nuances.
  • Pecorino Toscano or Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano – Salty, nutty cheeses enhance fruit complexity and soften tannins.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to allow the wine’s depth and structure to emerge fully.
  • A decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended to open the aromatics and soften the firm tannins.
  • Use a large Bordeaux-style glass to maximise aeration and showcase its layered complexity.
  • This vintage offers both immediate enjoyment and excellent aging potential, developing further nuance over the next 8–12 years when cellared in cool, stable conditions.
