The Crushed Grape

Castrofiz Barrica Magnum 2022

Regular price £49.95

A powerful and beautifully structured Ribeira Sacra red presented in magnum format, combining ripe Mencía fruit, dark berry concentration, spice, and carefully integrated oak. Richer and more age-worthy than the estate’s standard bottlings, it showcases the depth and ambition of one of Galicia’s emerging artisanal producers.

Castrofiz Barrica Magnum 2022 is the flagship oak-aged red from Adega Castrofiz, a small family winery located in the heart of Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra appellation. Established in Chantada and dedicated to traditional, sustainable viticulture, the estate focuses on expressing the unique character of its steep hillside vineyards while preserving the authenticity of the region’s native varieties.

Black cherry, blackberry, damson plum, and wild blueberry are layered with vanilla spice, cocoa, cedar, black pepper, and subtle herbal notes. The palate combines ripe fruit concentration with mineral freshness, leading to a long and savoury finish.

An excellent alternative to Rioja Reserva or Ribera del Duero for those looking to explore one of Spain’s most exciting modern wine regions while enjoying the added prestige and ageing potential of a large-format bottle.

Description

The wine is produced primarily from Mencía, supported by small proportions of traditional local varieties including Garnacha Tintorera and Sousón, grapes that contribute colour, structure, and complexity. Ribeira Sacra is one of Spain’s most dramatic wine regions, where vineyards cling to steep river valleys and benefit from a unique combination of Atlantic freshness and inland warmth. These conditions allow grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining vibrant acidity and aromatic precision.

Unlike the fresher and more fruit-driven Castrofiz Mencía or Tradición bottlings, Barrica is designed as a more serious and structured expression of the estate. Ageing in oak barrels adds depth, texture, and complexity while allowing the naturally vibrant fruit character of Mencía to remain at the forefront. The result is a wine that bridges the gap between the freshness of north-west Spain and the richness associated with more powerful red wines.

The 2022 vintage benefited from excellent ripeness, giving the wine greater concentration and generosity while preserving the freshness that defines Ribeira Sacra. In magnum format, the wine will mature more slowly and gracefully than a standard bottle, allowing additional complexity to develop over time.

Style

A dry, medium- to full-bodied red with ripe dark fruit, polished tannins, and subtle oak complexity. The combination of Mencía’s natural freshness and barrel ageing creates a wine that feels both powerful and elegant, with significantly more structure and depth than lighter Ribeira Sacra reds.

Unlike heavily extracted oak-driven wines, the emphasis remains on balance and regional character. The fruit remains vibrant and expressive, while the oak adds texture, spice, and longevity rather than dominance.

In simple terms: a premium Spanish red that combines the freshness of Galicia with the richness of barrel ageing — dark-fruited, smooth, and sophisticated, with enough structure to reward further cellaring.
