The Crushed Grape

Castrofiz Tradicion 2021

Regular price £17.99

A refined and expressive Ribeira Sacra red with vibrant red berry fruit, floral aromatics, slate-driven minerality, and elegant Atlantic freshness. Complex, terroir-driven, and unmistakably Galician in character.

Castrofiz Tradición 2021 is a red wine from the dramatic hillside vineyards of Ribeira Sacra in Galicia, north-western Spain. Unlike the richer, hotter styles often associated with inland Spain, Ribeira Sacra is defined by steep terraced vineyards, Atlantic influence, schist and slate soils, and a naturally fresher, more mineral expression of red wine.

Ccrafted from a blend of Garnacha, Mencía, and Tempranillo grape varieties. Red cherry, wild raspberry, cranberry, and blackberry are layered with violet, cracked pepper, graphite, wet stone, and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is energetic and precise, with savoury minerality carrying through the finish.

Description

The wine is predominantly based on Mencía, the region’s signature red grape, often supported by small proportions of traditional local varieties. Mencía thrives in Ribeira Sacra because it combines perfume, freshness, and mineral precision rather than sheer weight or extraction.

The result is a style that many wine professionals compare stylistically to cooler-climate Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, or northern Rhône Syrah rather than heavier Spanish reds.

“Tradición” reflects a more classic and terroir-focused expression of Ribeira Sacra, highlighting elegance and site expression over oak dominance or excessive ripeness. The 2021 vintage particularly suits this approach, bringing excellent freshness, aromatic definition, and purity of fruit.

This is a very compelling wine for those who want something more sophisticated and mineral than a typical warm-climate Spanish red — a wine with freshness, complexity, and strong regional identity.

Style

Castrofiz Tradición 2021 is a dry, medium-bodied red with bright acidity, fine tannins, and pronounced mineral freshness. It is lighter and more lifted than Rioja or Ribera del Duero, focusing instead on elegance, red fruit purity, and savoury complexity.

In simple terms: an elegant Atlantic Spanish red — floral, mineral, and fresh rather than heavy or heavily oaked.

  • Appearance: Bright ruby with purple highlights.
  • Nose: Red berries, violet, cracked pepper, graphite, and floral lift.
  • Palate: Fresh red fruit with mineral tension, spice, and elegant savoury complexity.
  • Texture: Medium-bodied with fine tannins and lively acidity.
  • Finish: Long, stony, and energetic.
  • Overall Impression: A beautifully balanced Ribeira Sacra red that captures the freshness, minerality, and elegance that make Galicia one of Spain’s most exciting modern wine regions.
  • Roast Lamb – The freshness and spice work beautifully with herb-led lamb dishes.
  • Charcuterie – Excellent with cured meats and tapas-style service.
  • Grilled Mushrooms – Earthy dishes complement the wine’s mineral and savoury profile.
  • Duck Breast – Bright acidity balances richer poultry dishes very effectively.
  • Semi-Hard Cheeses – Particularly good with Manchego and similar cheeses.
  • Serve at 14–16°C.
  • A brief 20–30 minute decant is beneficial.
  • Use a Burgundy-style or medium red wine glass.
  • Drink now and over the next 5–8 years.
