The Crushed Grape

Château d’Agassac 2020

Regular price £24.95

A polished Haut‑Médoc with cassis, cedar, dark berry fruit, and refined Left Bank structure. Classic, balanced, and quietly authoritative.

With origins tracing back to the 13th century, Château d’Agassac is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, its fairy‑tale towers reflected in the surrounding moat. Today, it is celebrated as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, a mark of quality that places it among the elite producers of the Haut‑Médoc. The estate’s gravel and clay‑limestone soils, caressed by the breezes of the Gironde estuary, provide the ideal conditions for crafting wines of refinement, structure, and balance.

The 2020 vintage was a triumph for the Médoc - a year of consistent ripening and ideal harvest conditions. At d’Agassac, the result is a blend of 55% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc, combining plush fruit with firm backbone.

Approachable now after a brief decant, this wine will age gracefully for well over a decade, developing greater complexity and softness. It is a textbook expression of Haut‑Médoc elegance, marrying history, terroir, and meticulous winemaking in every glass.

Description

Château d’Agassac 2020 comes from the southern Haut‑Médoc, where gravelly soils favour Cabernet Sauvignon while clay and other mixed soils allow Merlot to contribute breadth and roundness. The estate has long been seen as one of the strong value names in the appellation, offering recognisably Left Bank structure without the price level of the more famous classed growth communes.

The 2020 blend is broadly classic in composition, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot closely balanced and a small amount of Cabernet Franc adding aromatic detail. That balance is important: d’Agassac often succeeds because it offers genuine Médoc character — black fruit, cedar, graphite, tannin — while remaining more approachable and polished than many stricter, more austere wines at a similar stage.

The 2020 vintage suits the château well. It provided concentration and ripeness, but the wine still feels fresh and structured rather than heavy. For those looking for a proper Left Bank Bordeaux with both immediate appeal and some ageing potential, this is a very convincing bottle.

Style

A dry, medium- to full-bodied red with classic Médoc proportions. The tannins are definite but well handled, giving the wine shape and seriousness without making it hard or drying.

Compared with softer Right Bank Bordeaux, it is more linear and savoury, but compared with tougher traditional Haut‑Médoc, it feels more polished and ready to enjoy. In simple terms: a classic Cabernet-influenced Bordeaux — structured and refined, but with enough ripeness to make it satisfying now.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet depth.
  • Nose: Cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and tobacco leaf.
  • Palate: Dark fruit layered with savoury oak, mineral notes, and subtle spice.
  • Texture: Medium- to full-bodied with refined, structured tannins.
  • Finish: Long, dry, and classically Médoc in style.
  • Overall Impression: A very good-value Haut‑Médoc that delivers genuine Left Bank character with polish and balance.
  • Roast Beef – A natural pairing for the wine’s Cabernet-led structure.
  • Lamb with Rosemary – Herbal and savoury notes dovetail with the wine’s cedar and cassis profile.
  • Duck Breast – A good fit for the wine’s balance of fruit and grip.
  • Mushroom and Lentil Dishes – Earthy flavours bring out the wine’s savoury side.
  • Aged Hard Cheeses – Especially good with Comté, Manchego, or mature cheddar.
  • Serve at 16–18°C for full aromatic expression and proper tannin balance.
  • Decant for 45–60 minutes before serving to help the structure relax.
  • Use a large Bordeaux glass to allow the bouquet to unfold.
  • Drink now with air or cellar for another 6–10 years in good conditions.
