The Crushed Grape

Château de Meursault Beaune 1er Cru Les Fèves 2015

Regular price £41.99

A beautifully mature red Burgundy from one of Beaune's most highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards.

Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, it combines the elegance and perfume of fine Burgundy with the additional depth and complexity that more than a decade of bottle age can bring. Red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry are joined by increasingly savoury notes of dried flowers, woodland, gentle spice and earthy complexity, all carried by fine tannins and refreshing acidity.

The excellent 2015 Burgundy vintage gives the wine generous fruit and concentration while retaining the finesse expected from a quality Beaune Premier Cru.

A compelling choice for lovers of mature Pinot Noir and an opportunity to experience Burgundy with genuine bottle development.

Description

Château de Meursault is one of Burgundy's historic estates, with origins stretching back to the 11th century. Based in the village of Meursault, the domaine possesses an extensive collection of vineyards across the Côte de Beaune, producing both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of the region's most distinguished appellations.

Les Fèves is a small Premier Cru vineyard in Beaune, situated on the slopes immediately north of the town. Its position and limestone-rich soils are particularly well suited to Pinot Noir, producing wines noted for combining aromatic elegance with structure, depth and excellent ageing potential.

The 2015 vintage is particularly significant. Widely regarded as an excellent year for red Burgundy, warm and favourable growing conditions produced ripe, concentrated Pinot Noir while the best vineyards retained freshness and balance. With more than a decade of development, this bottle is now entering a fascinating stage of maturity, where primary red fruit begins to mingle with the complex savoury characteristics associated with aged Burgundy.

Style

This is a medium-bodied, dry Pinot Noir that prioritises elegance and complexity rather than power. The fruit is softer and more developed than in a young Burgundy, with fresh cherry and raspberry beginning to give way to more savoury, earthy and gently spiced flavours.

If you're accustomed to bigger reds such as Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon, this will feel considerably lighter and more delicate. The appeal lies instead in its silky texture, perfume and layers of flavour that develop in the glass.

If you enjoy premium Pinot Noir, mature Rioja or elegant Northern Italian reds, but want something finer and more nuanced, mature red Burgundy is a natural progression.

  • Nose: Elegant and increasingly complex, with aromas of red cherry, raspberry and dried strawberry alongside rose petals, subtle spice, forest floor and gentle earthy notes.
  • Palate: Refined and silky, with mature red berry fruit complemented by savoury spice, dried herbs and subtle woodland character. Fine tannins and fresh acidity provide structure, while bottle age brings greater harmony and complexity.
  • Finish: Long, elegant and savoury, with lingering red fruit, gentle spice and earthy mineral notes.
  • Duck Breast – Rich duck is beautifully balanced by Pinot Noir's acidity and delicate fruit.
  • Roast Guinea Fowl – Subtle game flavours complement the wine without overpowering its elegance.
  • Beef Wellington – Tender beef and mushroom flavours work wonderfully with mature Burgundy.
  • Wild Mushroom Risotto – Earthy mushrooms echo the wine's developing savoury character.
  • Roast Pork – Delicate meat suits the wine's medium body and silky tannins.
  • Comté or Gruyère – Nutty mature cheeses complement its evolved, savoury complexity.
  • Serve at 15–17°C – Slightly cool serving preserves the perfume and freshness of mature Pinot Noir.
  • Open carefully 20–30 minutes before serving – At this age, avoid aggressive or prolonged decanting; decant gently only if sediment is present.
  • Use a large Burgundy glass – The wide bowl allows its delicate aromas and mature complexity to unfold.
  • Drink now or continue cellaring – The 2015 is entering an excellent drinking window now and well-stored bottles should continue to evolve over the coming years.
