The Crushed Grape

Château Fougas Maldoror 2020

Regular price £23.50

A rich and modern Bordeaux with ripe dark fruit, velvety texture, and polished structure. Smooth, expressive, and full of depth.

Crafted from biodynamically farmed vineyards overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Fougas Maldoror 2020 is a pure and expressive Bordeaux that blends Right Bank charm with natural precision. The Merlot-driven core brings lush blackberry and plum fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone, freshness, and subtle spice.

The nose is vibrant with notes of violets, wild herbs, and graphite, unfolding into a palate of ripe dark fruit, cocoa, and earthy minerality. Medium to full-bodied with refined tannins and balanced acidity, it finishes long and elegant with a fresh, savory lift.

Certified biodynamic and praised for its clarity and character, this is Bordeaux for the modern drinker - clean, structured, and quietly powerful.

Drink now or cellar through 2032.

Description

Château Fougas Maldoror 2020 comes from the Côtes de Bourg appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, an area known for producing approachable yet characterful Merlot-led wines. The vineyards sit on a mix of clay-limestone and gravel soils, which help balance ripeness with freshness and structure.

The blend is predominantly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc adding structure, spice, and aromatic lift. The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux was excellent, producing wines with both concentration and freshness, allowing for a style that is rich yet well-balanced.

Château Fougas is run by a forward-thinking team that emphasises organic and biodynamic vineyard practices, alongside modern winemaking techniques. The “Maldoror” cuvée represents a more refined and expressive selection, crafted to highlight purity of fruit, texture, and precision.

Style

A dry, medium- to full-bodied red with a plush, rounded texture and polished tannins. It leans toward a modern Bordeaux style - generous, smooth, and fruit-forward - rather than firm or austere.

The wine feels rich and layered, with a velvety mouthfeel that makes it approachable even in its youth. At the same time, there is enough structure and freshness to keep it balanced and suitable for ageing.
