Château Langoa Barton 2009

Regular price £89.95

A magnificent mature Saint-Julien Third Growth combining cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, cigar box, and exceptional refinement. Rich and powerful thanks to the outstanding 2009 vintage, yet retaining the classical balance and precision that have made Langoa Barton one of Bordeaux's most respected traditional estates.

Château Langoa Barton 2009 is the flagship wine of this historic Saint-Julien estate, classified as a Troisième Cru Classé (Third Growth) in the landmark 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. Owned continuously by the Barton family since 1821, Langoa Barton remains one of the few major Bordeaux estates still under long-term family ownership, renowned for producing wines of consistency, longevity, and outstanding value relative to their classification.

Compared with its sibling estate Léoville Barton, Langoa Barton often shows slightly more charm and accessibility earlier in life while retaining similar ageing potential. The 2009 vintage exemplifies this beautifully, offering both richness and approachability while maintaining the structure expected of top Saint-Julien.

For collectors and enthusiasts, Château Langoa Barton 2009 represents one of the great successes of the vintage and an opportunity to experience mature classified-growth Bordeaux at a superb stage of development.

Description

Situated in the heart of Saint-Julien, the estate benefits from deep gravel soils over clay subsoils, a terroir ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. These well-drained vineyards consistently produce wines that combine structure, aromatic complexity, freshness, and exceptional ageing potential.

The 2009 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the modern era. Near-perfect growing conditions delivered remarkable ripeness, concentration, and tannin maturity across the region. Unlike some estates that produced overly opulent wines in 2009, Langoa Barton retained its classical identity, balancing the richness of the vintage with freshness, precision, and Saint-Julien elegance.

The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, creating a wine that marries power and structure with refinement and aromatic complexity. Now entering an exceptional stage of maturity, the wine has evolved beyond primary fruit into a beautifully layered expression of mature Bordeaux, where cedar, tobacco, graphite, leather, and cigar box notes complement the remaining dark fruit core.

Style

Château Langoa Barton 2009 is a dry, full-bodied Bordeaux with mature black fruit, polished tannins, and remarkable harmony. Time in bottle has softened the wine’s youthful power, transforming it into a beautifully integrated expression of mature Saint-Julien.

Unlike younger vintages that emphasise structure and primary fruit, the 2009 now offers increasing tertiary complexity while still retaining impressive concentration and freshness. The wine feels rich and layered without becoming heavy, reflecting the balance that distinguishes the finest Bordeaux.

In simple terms: a mature classified-growth Bordeaux at its peak — rich, elegant, and deeply complex, combining the generosity of the legendary 2009 vintage with the timeless refinement of Saint-Julien.
