Chateau Musar 2017
A legendary Lebanese red with extraordinary complexity, combining dark fruit, spice, dried herbs, leather, and earthy maturity in a style unlike almost any other wine in the world.
Château Musar 2017 is one of the world’s most distinctive and iconic wines, produced from high-altitude vineyards in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley by the historic Hochar family estate. Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar and internationally championed by the late Serge Hochar, Château Musar has long occupied a unique place in fine wine: neither traditionally Bordeaux nor Rhône, but unmistakably Lebanese in identity and philosophy.
The wine is produced from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, grown in the Bekaa Valley at elevations of around 1,000 metres above sea level. The combination of warm Mediterranean sunshine, cooling altitude, and old-vine fruit creates wines with both richness and remarkable freshness.
Musar’s traditional winemaking approach - long élevage, minimal intervention, and extended bottle ageing before release - gives the wine its famously evolved, complex personality even in youth.
Black cherry, dried cranberry, plum, fig, and blackberry are layered with leather, cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, clove, exotic spice, forest floor, and a faint gamey-earthy note that is signature Musar. As the wine opens, floral notes, balsamic nuances, and incense-like aromatics emerge. The finish is long, savoury, and constantly evolving.
The 2017 vintage was marked by challenging climatic conditions, including spring frost and summer heat, yet Musar’s old vines and low-intervention philosophy still produced a wine of depth and authenticity. Compared with some richer vintages, 2017 leans more toward savoury complexity, aromatic lift, and structure rather than sheer opulence, which many long-time Musar followers find particularly compelling.
What makes Château Musar unique is that it does not chase polish or technical perfection in the modern sense. Instead, it offers a constantly evolving, tertiary-driven profile where fruit, earth, spice, volatile lift, leather, herbs, and game-like complexity all intertwine. It is one of the very few wines in the world that can comfortably appeal to lovers of mature Bordeaux, traditional Rhône, old Barolo, and fine natural wine simultaneously.
Château Musar is not simply a bottle of wine — it is an experience and a conversation piece. Those familiar with the estate actively seek its individuality, while adventurous collectors often discover it as one of the wine world’s great cult classics.
A dry, full-bodied red with mature structure, savoury complexity, and layered tertiary character rather than overt primary fruit. The wine combines Mediterranean warmth with remarkable freshness, offering earthy depth, lifted aromatics, and long ageing potential.
Unlike modern polished reds focused on sweetness and extraction, Musar is intentionally traditional and idiosyncratic. The tannins are fine but present, the acidity remains lively, and the flavour profile evolves continuously in the glass.
