The 2005 Château Pesquié Artemia Rouge, offered here in rare magnum format, represents the pinnacle of the estate’s craftsmanship and one of the most celebrated vintages ever produced in the Ventoux appellation. Sourced from old-vine Syrah and Grenache grown on limestone and clay soils at the foot of Mont Ventoux, this bottling exemplifies the depth and structure that have made 2005 a benchmark year across the Rhône Valley. Large formats of this cuvée are exceptionally scarce and prized for their enhanced longevity and cellaring potential.

Description

Château Pesquié “Artemia” Rouge 2005 Magnum is a superb mature southern Rhône-style wine from the Ventoux appellation, presented in one of the most prized formats for long-term ageing. Produced by the Chaudière family at Château Pesquié, Artemia represents the estate’s flagship red and has long been regarded as one of Ventoux’s benchmark wines.

The wine is based primarily on Syrah, supported by Grenache, sourced from high-altitude limestone vineyards at the foot of Mont Ventoux. These elevated sites play a critical role in maintaining freshness and aromatic precision, helping the wine retain structure and balance even in warm vintages.

The 2005 Rhône vintage is considered exceptional, producing wines with concentration, structure, and outstanding ageing capacity. In magnum format, that ageing process occurs more slowly and evenly than in standard bottle size, allowing the wine to preserve freshness and vitality while developing extraordinary tertiary complexity over time.

Now approaching full maturity, the wine has evolved beyond primary fruit into a deeply savoury and layered profile, with leather, tobacco, dried herbs, olive tapenade, spice, and earthy Rhône complexity emerging alongside the remaining dark fruit core. The magnum format gives the wine additional vibrancy and structural integrity, making it feel notably fresher and more energetic than many wines of comparable age in standard bottle.

Stylistically, mature Artemia often sits between the richness of the southern Rhône and the peppery structure of northern Rhône Syrah, offering a compelling alternative to more famous appellations at exceptional value.

Style

A dry, full-bodied Rhône-style red with mature dark fruit, savoury tertiary complexity, and refined structure. Extended ageing in magnum has softened the wine’s youthful power while preserving freshness, aromatic lift, and depth.

Unlike younger Rhône reds focused on fruit intensity, the emphasis here is on maturity, texture, spice, and evolved savoury character. The wine remains broad and powerful, but now shows significantly more elegance and complexity than in youth.

In simple terms: a mature and beautifully evolved Rhône-style magnum - rich, earthy, savoury, and deeply complex, with the freshness and refinement that only extended ageing in large format can deliver.

  • Serve at 16–18°C.
  • SDecant gently for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to fully evolve and to remove sediment.
  • Use a large Rhône or Bordeaux-style glass.
  • Drink now while at a superb stage of maturity, though the magnum format may continue evolving positively for several more years.
