Château Pesquié “Artemia” Rouge 2006

Regular price £34.95

A mature and beautifully evolved Rhône-style red from Ventoux, offering dark fruit, leather, spice, dried herbs, and savoury complexity. Powerful yet refined, with the freshness and structure that have made Artemia one of southern Rhône’s standout value wines.

Château Pesquié “Artemia” Rouge 2006 is one of the flagship wines of Château Pesquié, a highly respected family estate located in the Ventoux appellation in the southern Rhône Valley. Produced from high-altitude vineyards at the foothills of Mont Ventoux, Artemia has long demonstrated that Ventoux is capable of producing wines with real depth, structure, and ageing potential far beyond the appellation’s modest historical reputation.

An excellent mature Rhône-style wine offering genuine bottle age and complexity without the pricing associated with Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, or Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Description

The wine is predominantly based on Syrah, supported by Grenache, with the elevated limestone-rich vineyards playing a crucial role in preserving freshness and aromatic precision. Unlike many warmer southern Rhône reds that can become broad and heavy with age, Artemia often retains remarkable balance because of the cooling mountain influence.

The 2006 vintage now sits at a beautifully mature stage of development. Primary fruit has softened into more savoury, tertiary complexity, allowing notes of leather, dried herbs, spice, tobacco, and forest floor to emerge alongside the remaining dark fruit core. The oak influence, once more prominent in youth, has integrated fully into the wine’s texture and aromatic profile.

Stylistically, mature Artemia often feels closer to a northern Rhône-inspired Syrah blend than to a simple southern Rhône red. The wine combines Mediterranean warmth with freshness, peppery structure, and mineral lift, making it especially compelling for drinkers who enjoy aged Rhône wines but are looking for something slightly less obvious and often exceptional value.

Style

A dry, full-bodied Rhône-style red with mature dark fruit, savoury tertiary complexity, and refined tannic structure. Time in bottle has softened the wine’s power, replacing youthful density with layered spice, leather, earth, and evolved Syrah character.

Unlike younger fruit-driven Rhône reds, the emphasis here is on maturity, savoury nuance, and texture rather than primary fruit intensity. The wine still retains freshness and structure, but now shows significantly more elegance and complexity than in its youth.

In simple terms: a mature southern Rhône-style red — deep, savoury, and beautifully evolved, with the richness of Syrah and Grenache softened into silky complexity.

  • Serve at 16–18°C.
  • Decant carefully for 45 minutes to remove sediment and allow the aromatics to fully open.
  • Use a large Rhône or Bordeaux-style glass.
  • Drink now while the wine is in a mature and highly expressive stage.
