The Crushed Grape

Dievole Petrignano Chianti Classico 2020

Regular price £27.99

A refined Chianti Classico with bright red fruit, lively structure, and classic Sangiovese spice. Elegant, balanced, and food-friendly.

Produced by Dievole, one of Tuscany’s most historic estates, with documented origins dating back to 1090 AD, Dievole stands among the oldest wine-producing properties in the region. Located in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern sector of Chianti Classico, the estate benefits from altitude, diverse soils, and optimal vineyard exposure - key factors in producing structured and age-worthy Sangiovese.

Dievole’s philosophy centres on organic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, with a strong emphasis on expressing terroir. Fermentation and maturation often take place in large oak casks (botti grandi) rather than small barriques, preserving the purity, transparency, and natural acidity of Sangiovese. The goal is balance, authenticity, and a clear reflection of site rather than overt oak influence.

Vibrant notes of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry lead the palate, accompanied by hints of dried herbs, black tea, and a gentle Tuscan earthiness. Subtle spice, a touch of cedar, and fine mineral tension frame the fruit, culminating in a clean, persistent finish that showcases both freshness and complexity.

Description

Dievole Petrignano comes from the heart of Chianti Classico, one of Italy’s most historic and celebrated appellations. This area between Florence and Siena is famed for its rolling hills, limestone and clay soils, and a tradition of producing expressive Sangiovese-based wines that marry vibrant fruit with fresh acidity and savoury complexity.

Crafted predominantly from Sangiovese, the backbone grape of Chianti Classico, this wine reflects the region’s quintessential character: bright cherry and red berry intensity, savoury herb nuances, and vibrant structure. Small amounts of complementary varieties (often Canaiolo or local blends) may be included to add roundness and aromatic harmony. Vines are planted on classic Tuscan hillsides, combining altitude and aspect to balance ripeness with refreshing acidity.

Produced by Dievole - one of the oldest and most respected estates in Tuscany - Petrignano represents a thoughtful blend of tradition and precision. Dievole focuses on vineyard health, sustainable practices, and site-driven expression, resulting in wines that are both authentic and refined.

Style

A dry, medium-bodied Chianti Classico with red berry fruit, herbs, earthy spice, and fine tannins. The cooler, more traditional styling gives the wine freshness and elegance rather than plush richness.

In simple terms: a refined traditional Chianti — fresh, savoury, and beautifully balanced for long lunches and classic Italian cuisine.

  • Appearance: Bright ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim, indicating both freshness and early development.
  • Nose: Expressive aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried cranberry layered with notes of violet, crushed herbs, and subtle spice. Hints of black tea and earthy minerality add depth.
  • Palate: Medium-bodied and vibrant, showing ripe red berry fruit framed by savoury Tuscan herbs, fine spice, and a touch of mineral tension.
  • Texture: Firm yet refined tannins supported by lively acidity, creating structure and precision without heaviness.
  • Finish: Clean and persistent, with lingering red fruit, subtle earth, and a gently savoury lift.
  • Overall Impression: A poised and terroir-driven Sangiovese from Chianti Classico, combining elegance, structure, and classic regional character.
  • Pasta al Ragù (Bolognese or Sugo di Chianina) – The wine’s acidity cuts through rich tomato sauce and enhances savoury depth.
  • Grilled Tuscan Sausage – Ripe fruit and spice complement the sausage’s herbal intensity.
  • Margherita or Mushroom Pizza – Bright acidity balances the tomato and cheese while enhancing earthy notes.
  • Roast Pork with Rosemary – Savoury herbs mirror the wine’s herbal and spice nuances.
  • Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano – Nutty, salty cheeses elevate fruit character and integrated structure.
  • Serve at 15–17°C to preserve freshness and highlight its bright fruit and spice character.
  • A short decant of 20–30 minutes will help open the aromatics and smooth the tannins.
  • Use a medium-bowl red wine glass to enhance aromatics while maintaining balance.
  • This vintage is approachable now but will continue to develop gracefully over the next 5–8 years when stored in cool, stable conditions.
