Description

Coto de Imaz Reserva is a traditional expression of Spain’s prestigious Rioja region, crafted in the Reserva style that balances ripe fruit with extended oak maturation. The 2021 vintage produced well-structured, fresh fruit ideal for aging and integration.

The wine is predominantly made from Tempranillo, Rioja’s flagship variety, selected from estate vineyards to ensure consistency and character. Careful aging in American oak barrels followed by bottle refinement enhances complexity while preserving varietal purity and regional identity.

Produced by El Coto de Rioja, one of Rioja’s most established and widely respected wineries, Coto de Imaz reflects decades of experience in crafting reliable, classically styled Reservas. The estate is known for its extensive vineyard holdings and focus on balanced, food-friendly wines.

Style

A classic Rioja Reserva that combines elegance with structure. Predominantly Tempranillo, it is medium to full-bodied with polished tannins, vibrant red and black berry fruit, and beautifully integrated notes of vanilla, cedar, sweet spice and toasted oak from extended barrel ageing. Fresh and balanced with a smooth, persistent finish, it is a refined and approachable Rioja that showcases both the richness of the 2021 vintage and the timeless style of Rioja Alta.

  • Primary aromas: Dominated by fresh and ripe red fruit such as cherry, raspberry, and plum. These notes provide a vibrant, fruity profile.
  • Secondary aromas: Subtle oak influence introduces vanilla, spice, and a hint of cocoa. The wine shows traces of toasted oak and smoke, adding depth.
  • Tertiary aromas: The wine may also display some light leather and earthy nuances, which will likely become more pronounced with age, giving it a more complex, mature bouquet.
  • Body: Medium to full-bodied, the wine offers a smooth, balanced mouthfeel that’s rich yet approachable.
  • Fruit flavors: On the palate, the fruit character continues with dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, with a hint of blueberry as it opens up. These are ripe and concentrated but still fresh.
  • Oak influence: The wine carries the signature oak flavors of vanilla, toast, and a subtle spicy edge from the aging process.
  • Tannins: Smooth, fine-grained tannins provide structure, giving the wine a silky mouthfeel while still maintaining good grip and balance.
  • Acidity: A good level of acidity provides a refreshing lift, helping to maintain the wine's vibrancy and enhancing its aging potential.
  • Finish: The finish is long and elegant, with lingering flavors of dark fruit, oak spice, and a slight hint of smoke.
  • Grilled or roasted meats: This wine pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, roast beef, or steak.
  • Cheeses: Try it with aged cheeses like Manchego, Gouda, or a tangy blue cheese.
  • Rich stews or casseroles: Perfect with hearty dishes such as beef stew, mushroom risotto, or a roast pork shoulder.
  • Tapas: Also a great match for Spanish tapas, such as jamón, chorizo, or patatas bravas.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to allow its structure and oak integration to show clearly.
  • A decant of 30–45 minutes will help open the aromatics and soften the tannins, particularly in its youth.
  • Use a medium to large Bordeaux-style glass to encourage aeration and highlight its layered fruit and spice notes.
  • Drinking well now, this Reserva can also continue to evolve gracefully over the next several years if stored in cool, stable cellar conditions
