The Crushed Grape

Finca Villacreces Pruno 2022

Regular price £19.75

A powerful yet polished Ribera del Duero with dark fruit depth, refined oak spice, and impressive structure. Bold, modern, and beautifully balanced.

From Spain’s prestigious Ribera del Duero DO, a region renowned for producing structured, age-worthy Tempranillo wines. The continental climate - with hot summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variation - allows grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness and natural acidity.

The blend is primarily based on Tempranillo (locally known as Tinto Fino), complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo provides depth, structure, and rich dark fruit character, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds backbone, aromatic lift, and additional aging potential. Aging in French oak barrels refines the tannins and integrates spice without overshadowing the fruit.

Produced by Finca Villacreces, an estate located along the Duero River and known for its sustainably farmed vineyards, Pruno has earned international acclaim for delivering exceptional quality and value.

Description

Finca Villacreces, situated in the heart of the famed “golden mile” of Ribera del Duero and neighbouring the legendary estate of Vega Sicilia, is a standout producer known for its expressive and high-quality red wines. The estate’s vineyards are planted on a mix of sandy, gravel, shingle and quartz soils at around 710–735 m above sea level, which confer both ripe fruit and fresh elevation-derived precision.

Made predominantly from Tempranillo with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested and carefully selected from the estate’s own plots. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around 12 months in French oak (second and third-year barrels) to provide integration rather than heavy wood influence.

The result is a wine of impressive value and character: rich yet poised, concentrated but fresh. With deep cherry and plum fruit, liquorice and graphite under-tones, and a polished structure, Pruno 2022 offers a taste of Ribera del Duero’s distinctive terroir - accessible now yet built to develop gracefully. A perfect choice for those looking for a Spanish red with both immediate appeal and authenticity.

Style

A modern Ribera del Duero with concentrated dark fruit, cocoa, spice, and polished tannins. The wine combines richness and oak depth with freshness and smooth drinkability.

In simple terms: a bold but polished Spanish red — powerful enough for steak, but smooth enough to enjoy immediately.

  • Appearance: Intense cherry red with violet tones at the rim.
  • Nose: Fresh red berry aromas mixed with plum, cocoa, toasted oak, liquorice and subtle mineral graphite.
  • Palate: Smooth entry, with rich cherry-plum fruit, subtle dark fruit depth, hints of coffee or cocoa, and fine tannins. Balanced by freshness and good structure.
  • Texture: Silky but structured - delivers both immediate pleasure and enough backbone for further maturation.
  • Finish: Long, with lingering red fruit, spice, cedar/wood nuance and clean mineral drive
  • Overall Impression: A well-crafted modern Spanish red that brings together enjoyment now and ageing potential - accessible yet serious.
  • Grilled Ribeye or Sirloin Steak – The wine’s firm tannins bind with the protein and fat, smoothing the structure while amplifying its dark fruit depth.
  • Roast Lamb with Garlic and Herbs – The savoury, herbal elements complement the wine’s ripe fruit and subtle oak spice.
  • Braised Beef Cheeks or Short Ribs – Slow-cooked, rich dishes mirror the wine’s concentration and layered complexity.
  • Barbecued Pork Ribs – Smoky, caramelised flavours align with the wine’s integrated oak and bold profile.
  • Venison or Game Dishes – The structure and intensity stand up to the depth and richness of game meats.
  • Aged Manchego or Hard Sheep’s Cheese – Nutty, salty cheeses highlight the fruit concentration while harmonising with the tannic backbone.
  • Serving temperature: 16–18°C (60–64°F)
  • Glassware: Large Bordeaux-style red wine glass to allow full aroma and flavour release
  • Decanting: Recommended for 15–20 minutes before serving to open the fruit and soften tannins
  • Cellaring advice: Drink now to enjoy freshness and fruit, or cellar up to around 8 years for more complexity
