El Coto Crianza 2022
A classic, hugely approachable Rioja Crianza made from 100% Tempranillo, combining ripe red fruit with the vanilla, toast and gentle spice that make traditional Rioja such a popular style.
Aged for at least 12 months in American oak barrels, followed by further maturation in bottle, it has a smooth, silky texture with beautifully integrated oak and a fresh, persistent finish.
This is Rioja at its most versatile: enough ripe fruit to make it immediately enjoyable, but with the extra depth and savoury character that comes from oak ageing. The 2022 has also picked up a Gold Medal at the 2025 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, adding further reassurance to an already dependable Rioja name.
For those looking for an easy step up from a straightforward Spanish red, this is an excellent choice – smooth, fruity and gently oaked rather than heavy or overly tannic, and particularly good with red meat, charcuterie or mature cheese.
El Coto de Rioja is based in Oyón in Rioja and has become one of the region's most recognisable producers. El Coto Crianza represents the classic house style: accessible, fruit-driven Rioja with enough oak ageing to add complexity without overwhelming the Tempranillo.
The wine is made from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes are fermented at the estate's Oyón winery with careful control of fermentation temperature, maceration and colour extraction to achieve a balance between fruit, structure and freshness.
Following fermentation, the wine spends a minimum of 12 months in selected 225-litre American oak barrels and at least another six months in bottle before leaving the winery. The American oak is an important part of its traditional Rioja character, contributing the familiar vanilla, toasted and spicy notes while allowing the fresh red fruit to remain prominent.
This is a medium-bodied, dry red that's smooth, fruity and very easy to enjoy.
Think ripe cherries and red berries with vanilla, gentle spice and toasted oak. The American oak gives it that recognisable Rioja character, but there's still plenty of fresh fruit, so it doesn't feel overly woody or heavy.
If you enjoy Tempranillo, smooth Spanish reds or softer oak-aged Cabernet and Merlot, El Coto Crianza is a very approachable choice. Compared with a Rioja Reserva, it's generally younger, fresher and more fruit-driven, with less emphasis on long ageing and mature savoury flavours.
In simple terms: smooth, fruity and gently oaked – classic everyday Rioja.
- Nose: Fresh and inviting, with ripe red berries and cherry accompanied by vanilla and the distinctive toasted aromas of American oak.
- Palate: Smooth and silky, with juicy red fruit supported by gentle tannins. Vanilla, toasted oak and well-integrated spice add depth while the fruit retains plenty of freshness.
- Finish: Persistent and balanced, with lingering red berry fruit, vanilla and subtle warming spice.
- Roast or Grilled Lamb – Tempranillo's red fruit and gentle spice work naturally with lamb.
- Steak & Grilled Beef – Soft tannins and toasted oak complement charred meat.
- Iberian Ham & Charcuterie – Fresh fruit balances the richness and saltiness of cured meats.
- Mature Cheese – Vanilla, spice and red fruit work beautifully with firm, savoury cheeses.
- Roast Pork – The wine is soft enough not to overpower pork while still bringing plenty of flavour.
- Baked Fish – Its moderate body makes it versatile enough for richer fish dishes.
- Serve at 16–18°C – the producer's recommended serving range.
- No lengthy decanting required – opening 15–30 minutes before serving is plenty for the youthful 2022.
- Use a medium-to-large red wine glass to allow the fruit, vanilla and spice to open.
- Enjoy now or over the next few years – Crianza is designed to offer a good balance between youthful fruit and developed oak character.
