Fantini Edizione 23 Cinque Autoctoni 2021
A rich, powerful Southern Italian red bringing together five indigenous grape varieties from Abruzzo and Puglia in one distinctive blend.
Made from Montepulciano, Primitivo, Sangiovese, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, it delivers concentrated cherry and blackcurrant fruit alongside herbs, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa and liquorice. Twelve months in a combination of American and French oak barriques adds depth, spice and polish.
Full-bodied and velvety, this is an excellent choice for those who enjoy rich Amarone-style Italian reds, Primitivo or powerful oak-aged wines, while retaining enough freshness to keep the wine balanced.
Fantini's Edizione Cinque Autoctoni was created to showcase the character of Southern Italy through five native grape varieties sourced across two regions.
The Montepulciano and Sangiovese come from hillside vineyards in Abruzzo, around 300 metres above sea level, while Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera are sourced farther south in Puglia. Because the fruit crosses regional boundaries, Edizione is bottled as Vino da Tavola rather than under a DOC or IGT appellation.
For Edizione 23, the blend is 33% Montepulciano, 30% Primitivo, 25% Sangiovese, 7% Negroamaro and 5% Malvasia Nera. Each variety is matured separately before the final blend is assembled.
The wine spends 12 months in new oak barriques — 60% American and 40% French oak — producing a generous, concentrated style with substantial complexity.
This is a full-bodied, rich and intensely flavoured Italian red.
Expect black cherry, blackcurrant and ripe dark fruit, followed by cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, liquorice and sweet oak spice.
The Primitivo provides richness and ripeness, Montepulciano brings depth and structure, while Sangiovese contributes freshness. Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera add further complexity to the blend.
If you enjoy Primitivo di Manduria, Amarone, Ripasso or other powerful Southern Italian reds, this should be firmly in your territory.
In simple terms: rich, powerful and velvety – a luxurious Italian red packed with dark fruit and spice.
- Nose: Intense and complex, with ripe cherry and blackcurrant complemented by dried herbs, cinnamon and cloves, followed by deeper notes of cocoa and liquorice.
- Palate: Rich and full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit and a powerful structure. Despite its weight, there's good freshness, while soft, velvety tannins and integrated oak give the wine a smooth, polished texture.
- Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, cocoa, liquorice and warming spice.
- Grilled Steak – the concentrated fruit and structure stand up particularly well to beef.
- Roast Lamb – ripe fruit and warming spice complement richly flavoured lamb.
- Slow-Cooked Beef – ideal with braised and slow-cooked meat dishes.
- Rich Pasta & Ragù – particularly good with tomato-based meat sauces.
- Charcuterie – the fruit and freshness balance salty cured meats.
- Mature Cheese – a natural partner for strong, aged cheeses.
- Serve at around 18°C.
- Decant for approximately one hour to allow the dense fruit and spice to open fully.
- Serve in a large red-wine glass.
- Although drinking beautifully now, its concentration and structure also make it suitable for further cellar ageing.
