Finca Sophenia Estate Reserva Malbec 2024

Regular price £17.95

A more serious and structured Malbec with dark fruit, violet, oak spice, and high-altitude definition. Rich, polished, and age-worthy.

From the high-altitude vineyards of Gualtallary in Argentina’s prestigious Uco Valley, the Finca Sophenia Estate Reserva Malbec is a standout expression of both regional identity and winemaking excellence.

Crafted by Finca Sophenia, a family-run estate known for its precision and mountain terroir, this wine reflects the purity, structure, and elegance that have made Gualtallary one of Mendoza’s most sought-after subregions.

Made from 100% Malbec grown at elevations of nearly 1,200 meters, this vintage showcases vibrant aromas of black cherry, plum, and violets, layered with hints of graphite, herbs, and cocoa. Aged for up to 12 months in French and American oak, it balances bold fruit with freshness and minerality - hallmarks of high-altitude winemaking.

Powerful yet poised, Finca Sophenia Estate Reserva Malbec 2024 offers serious depth, finesse, and aging potential - an exceptional example of what Argentine Malbec can be when crafted with care, tradition, and altitude.

Description

Finca Sophenia Estate Reserva Malbec sits above the Altosur wine in depth and seriousness, showing what the estate can do when more concentration, élevage, and structure are brought into play. High-altitude Mendoza fruit remains central, giving the wine the freshness and floral lift that define the best modern Malbec, but the Reserva level adds more depth and a stronger sense of architecture.

That combination is important. Many richer Malbecs can lose energy as oak and extraction increase, but here the altitude influence helps keep the wine balanced. The fruit remains dark and satisfying, but there is enough line and aromatic detail to stop it from becoming broad or anonymous.

This is a step-up Malbec: still recognisably Mendoza and immediately appealing, but with more layering, more polish, and better short- to mid-term ageing potential.

Style

A dry, full-bodied red with more concentration and tannic presence than an entry-level Malbec. It remains polished and drinkable, but clearly has more depth and cellar potential.

The style is premium and complete, rather than merely plush. In simple terms: a richer, more serious high-altitude Malbec that still retains freshness and balance.

  • Appearance: Deep purple-ruby with strong colour intensity.
  • Nose: Blackberry, cassis, violet, cocoa, and vanilla spice.
  • Palate: Dense dark fruit with floral lift and oak-derived complexity.
  • Texture: Full-bodied with polished but definite tannins.
  • Finish: Long, smooth, and layered.
  • Overall Impression: A premium Mendoza Malbec with more structure and detail than everyday examples, but still plenty of varietal generosity.
  • Ribeye Steak – Strong enough to handle a richer cut of beef.
  • Lamb Shoulder – The wine’s depth and spice work well with slow-roasted lamb.
  • Beef Short Ribs – A natural pairing for a fuller-bodied Malbec.
  • Mushroom Dishes – Earthy flavours pull out the wine’s savoury complexity.
  • Aged Cheeses – Excellent with mature hard cheeses.
  • Serve at 16–18°C.
  • Decant for 30–45 minutes before serving.
  • Use a large red wine glass.
  • Drink now with air or over the next 5–7 years.
