A fresh and aromatic Alsace white blend with citrus, stone fruit, and floral lift. Bright, lively, and wonderfully versatile.

Gentil Hugel 2023 is a vibrant, dry white wine from one of Alsace’s most storied producers. Made from a carefully selected blend of noble Alsatian grape varieties - including Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, and Muscat - this wine combines the richness of aromatics with the finesse of structure in a seamless, food-friendly style.

Founded in 1639, Famille Hugel is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in France and a benchmark name in Alsace. Based in the picturesque village of Riquewihr, the Hugel family has passed down winemaking expertise through 13 generations, helping to shape the identity and reputation of Alsatian wine on the world stage. Today, they remain renowned for their precision, tradition, and excellence in crafting wines that reflect both varietal character and regional heritage.

Gentil was once the traditional designation for blended noble white wines in Alsace - a name that Hugel revived and elevated. The 2023 vintage continues this legacy, bringing together floral elegance, juicy orchard and tropical fruit, and crisp minerality in a perfectly balanced dry white.

A versatile, crowd-pleasing white that’s ideal for both aperitif and the table.

Description

Gentil “Hugel” 2023 comes from Alsace in eastern France, a region known for producing highly aromatic white wines with clarity, freshness, and precision. Sheltered by the Vosges Mountains, Alsace enjoys a dry, sunny climate that allows grapes to ripen fully while retaining vibrant acidity.

“Gentil” is a traditional Alsatian field blend, combining several noble grape varieties including Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat, and Sylvaner. Unlike single-varietal wines, this blend is designed to capture the overall character of the region - balancing aromatic intensity, freshness, and texture in one harmonious wine.

Produced by Famille Hugel, one of Alsace’s most historic and respected producers, the wine reflects a long-standing philosophy of purity and precision. Hugel’s approach emphasises clean fermentation and expressive fruit, resulting in wines that are both authentic and approachable.

Style

A dry white wine with a light- to medium-bodied feel, offering both freshness and a gentle aromatic richness. While there is no noticeable sweetness, the aromatic grape varieties give the impression of softness and roundness.

The wine combines crisp acidity from grapes like Riesling with the more perfumed, textured elements of Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. This creates a balanced style that is both lively and expressive without becoming heavy or overpowering.
