Description

Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande is a compelling red from Portugal’s acclaimed Douro, a region famed for both its fortified wines and increasingly distinguished dry table wines. The Douro’s unique combination of steep terraced vineyards, schist soils, and a climate influenced by both Atlantic and inland conditions produces wines with notable concentration, balance, and mineral character.

Vinha Grande is typically crafted from a blend of indigenous Portuguese varieties, with Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca often playing key roles. Touriga Nacional brings vibrant dark fruit and aromatic intensity; Touriga Franca adds elegance and approachability; Tinta Roriz provides structure and backbone; and Tinta Barroca contributes soft texture and warmth. This blend showcases the layered complexity and harmony characteristic of quality Douro reds.

Produced by Casa Ferreirinha, one of the Douro’s historic and influential houses, Vinha Grande reflects a combination of tradition and modern precision. The winery is recognised for its focus on vineyard expression and careful integration of fruit and oak influence.

Style

A structured Douro red with concentrated dark fruit, spice, and polished oak influence. Richer and more serious than Esteva, it combines Douro power with modern refinement.

In simple terms: a premium Douro red — deep, polished, and ideal for customers wanting richness with elegance.

  • Colour: Deep ruby red
  • Aromas: Ripe black fruits (blackberries, plums), red berries, floral notes (violets), and hints of spice (pepper, clove) from oak aging
  • Palate: Rich and well-structured with layers of dark fruit, well-integrated tannins, and refreshing acidity
  • Finish: Long and smooth with lingering fruit and subtle spice
  • Grilled Lamb or Shoulder Chops – Herb-accented, savoury dishes match the wine’s fruit and structure.
  • Roast Pork with Garlic and Herbs – Balanced acidity cuts through richness, highlighting depth and spice.
  • Aged Sheep’s Cheese – Nutty, salty cheese enhances fruit intensity and softens tannins.
  • Chargrilled Steak or Ribs – Smoky flavours complement the ripe fruit and subtle oak influence.
  • Mediterranean Vegetable Bake (Ratatouille) – Earthy, roasted vegetables align with the wine’s mineral undertones.
  • Braised Beef or Lamb Stew – Layered, slow-cooked dishes mirror the wine’s complexity.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to allow its structure and nuanced aromatics to emerge.
  • A decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins.
  • Use a medium- to large-bowl red wine glass to encourage aeration and reveal layered fruit and spice.
  • This vintage is approachable now and will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years when stored in cool, stable conditions.
