Heartland Directors’ Cut Shiraz 2021

Regular price £23.95

A concentrated premium Shiraz with dark fruit, oak spice, and serious structure. Powerful, polished, and built for richer dishes.

The 2021 Directors’ Cut Shiraz is the flagship wine of Heartland Wines, created as a bold yet polished expression of Shiraz from Langhorne Creek, one of South Australia’s oldest and most distinguished wine regions. The name Directors’ Cut refers to the winery’s practice of selecting only the finest parcels of fruit each year – a careful edit that ensures this bottling reflects the ultimate potential of the vintage.

In 2021, conditions delivered fruit of outstanding quality, and the resulting wine is both powerful and refined.

In the glass, it shows a deep, inky purple hue with aromas of blackberry, black plum, and dark cherry, lifted by notes of mocha, vanilla, fennel, and subtle pepper spice.

The palate is plush and layered, with concentrated dark fruits woven with anise, clove, and chocolate, supported by velvety tannins and fresh acidity that keep the richness in balance. Maturation for 14 months in French and American oak hogsheads – 60% of which were new – adds texture and complexity while ensuring the fruit remains at the core.

The finish is long and savoury, echoing dark fruit and spice with a polished, modern edge. While drinking beautifully now, the wine has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years, developing greater savoury nuance and earthy complexity over time.

Description

Heartland Directors’ Cut Shiraz 2021 represents the more ambitious end of the producer’s range, where the focus shifts from straightforward varietal appeal toward deeper concentration, oak integration, and age-worthy structure. South Australia is a natural home for this style, and Directors’ Cut leans into the region’s strengths with confidence.

The wine is clearly intended to feel premium: darker fruit, more tannin, more oak polish, and a fuller palate than the standard bottlings. What matters is whether that extra weight still feels coherent, and here the balance is good enough to keep the richness from turning heavy.

Style

A dry, full-bodied red with concentrated fruit, firm structure, and a distinctly premium feel. It is denser and more oak-shaped than easy-drinking Shiraz, but still polished enough to drink now with air.
In simple terms: a more serious South Australian Shiraz — bold, dark, and designed to make an impact.

  • Appearance: Deep, opaque ruby-purple.
  • Nose: Blackberry, cassis, chocolate, pepper, and espresso.
  • Palate: Concentrated dark fruit with oak spice and firm structure.
  • Texture: Full-bodied with definite, polished tannins.
  • Finish: Long, powerful, and warming.
  • Overall Impression: A premium Shiraz with genuine scale and concentration, made for richer food and serious red drinkers.

  • Lamb Shank – Excellent with slow-cooked lamb.
  • Beef Short Ribs – Matches the wine’s scale and depth.
  • Game Dishes – The structure works well with darker meats.
  • Aged Hard Cheeses – Useful for bringing the tannins into balance.

  • Use a large red wine glass.
  • Best enjoyed now with air or over the next 5–8 years.
