L’Impression de Mauvesin Barton 2014

Regular price £21.99

A mature and elegant Bordeaux from the Barton family, offering layers of cassis, plum, cedar, tobacco, and earthy complexity. Now entering an attractive drinking window, it combines classic Left Bank structure with the charm and accessibility that make mature Bordeaux so rewarding.

L’Impression de Mauvesin Barton 2014 is the second wine of Château Mauvesin Barton, the historic Moulis-en-Médoc estate acquired by the Barton family in 2011. Following the acquisition, significant investment was made both in the vineyards and winery, rapidly elevating the quality and reputation of the estate while preserving its traditional Médoc identity.

The wine is sourced from younger vines and selected parcels within the estate, benefiting from the same meticulous vineyard management and winemaking philosophy applied to the grand vin. While designed to be more approachable in youth, L’Impression de Mauvesin Barton consistently displays the balance, structure, and authenticity that have become synonymous with the Barton name.

For those seeking mature Bordeaux without the price associated with classified growths, this represents an excellent opportunity to experience bottle-aged Médoc at a highly attractive level.

Description

The 2014 Bordeaux vintage is increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts for its classical style. Following a warm and dry September, many Médoc estates produced wines with excellent balance, moderate alcohol levels, and fresh acidity. Unlike some of the richer modern vintages, 2014 offers a more traditional expression of Bordeaux, where elegance and terroir expression take precedence over sheer concentration.

Now with a decade of bottle age, L’Impression de Mauvesin Barton 2014 has evolved beautifully. Primary fruit remains present, but the wine has begun to develop the savoury characteristics that make mature Bordeaux so compelling. Notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, and dried herbs have emerged alongside the remaining dark fruit core, creating a wine of genuine complexity and charm.

The blend is typically led by Merlot, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and small proportions of other traditional Bordeaux varieties. The Merlot influence contributes suppleness and early accessibility, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and freshness.

Style

L’Impression de Mauvesin Barton 2014 is a dry, medium-bodied Bordeaux with mature dark fruit, softened tannins, and emerging tertiary complexity. Time in bottle has transformed the wine from a youthful fruit-driven style into something more savoury, nuanced, and elegant.

Unlike younger Bordeaux focused on primary fruit and oak, the emphasis here is on balance, maturity, and subtle complexity. The tannins have softened beautifully, making the wine highly approachable while retaining enough structure to remain distinctly Médoc.

In simple terms: a mature Bordeaux with ten years of development — smooth, savoury, and elegant, offering the classic cedar-and-cassis character that Bordeaux lovers seek.
