The Crushed Grape

Laurent Lebrun Pouilly-Fumé “Les Petits Champs” 2024

Regular price £19.49

A refined, beautifully fresh Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, combining vibrant citrus and orchard fruit with the distinctive mineral character that makes Pouilly-Fumé such a sought-after alternative to Sancerre.

The 2024 shows attractive fruity and floral aromas with a delicate touch of honey, followed by a fresh, full-flavoured palate and lively acidity.

Made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc, this is a more restrained and sophisticated expression of the grape than the intensely tropical style often associated with New Zealand. Expect freshness, citrus and subtle fruit rather than overt passionfruit, with a clean mineral edge and persistent finish.

Elegant enough for seafood and special occasions but approachable enough to enjoy simply as a chilled glass on its own, this is classic Pouilly-Fumé with excellent versatility.

Description

Domaine Lebrun, headed by Laurent Lebrun, produces Les Petits Champs in the celebrated Pouilly-Fumé appellation of the Loire Valley, directly across the Loire from Sancerre. The region is renowned for Sauvignon Blanc, producing dry white wines prized for their freshness, aromatic character and mineral expression.

Les Petits Champs is produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc and represents a classic expression of the appellation. The 2024 combines ripe fruit and floral character with the refreshing acidity expected from Pouilly-Fumé, while a subtle honeyed note gives the wine an attractive degree of richness and roundness.

For customers familiar with Sauvignon Blanc but looking to move into something more refined, Pouilly-Fumé is an excellent progression. Rather than concentrating on overt tropical fruit, the emphasis is on freshness, elegance and mineral character, resulting in a wine that is particularly well suited to food.

Style

This is a dry, crisp and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, but it's more restrained and elegant than the intensely fruity Sauvignon Blancs you may know from New Zealand.

You'll still find plenty of fresh citrus and fruit, but the emphasis here is more on freshness, minerality and balance, with a subtle floral and honeyed character adding extra depth.

If you enjoy Sancerre, Chablis or premium Sauvignon Blanc, this sits very comfortably in that territory – fresh and easy to drink, but with enough refinement and complexity to feel like a definite step up from an everyday Sauvignon.

  • Nose: Fresh and expressive, with citrus and orchard fruit, delicate floral aromas and a subtle touch of honey.
  • Palate: Fresh yet satisfyingly full-flavoured, with bright fruit supported by lively acidity. The wine has enough weight to feel substantial while retaining the crisp, clean character expected from Loire Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Finish: Clean and persistent, with refreshing acidity, lingering fruit and a subtle mineral quality.
  • Goat's Cheese – The wine's bright acidity is a classic match for creamy, tangy goat's cheese.
  • Oysters & Shellfish – Crisp freshness and mineral character complement delicate seafood.
  • Grilled White Fish – Citrus-driven acidity lifts simple fish dishes beautifully.
  • Smoked Salmon – Fresh acidity cuts through the richness and smoky character.
  • Chicken & Herb Dishes – Its freshness works particularly well with lighter poultry dishes.
  • Green Salads & Vegetables – Herbal and fresh flavours naturally complement Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Serve well chilled at 8–10°C to emphasise its freshness and aromatic character.
  • No decanting required – simply open shortly before serving.
  • Use a medium white wine glass rather than a very narrow glass to allow the aromas to develop.
  • Enjoy now for maximum freshness, although a couple of years in bottle should allow additional complexity to emerge.
