The Crushed Grape

Leyda Coastal Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Regular price £14.95

A vibrant, intensely fresh cool-climate Chilean Sauvignon Blanc from the coastal Leyda Valley.

Grown just a few kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, it combines lively citrus fruit with white fruit, subtle herbal notes and the distinctive mineral character for which Leyda has become known. The palate is crisp and juicy, with bright acidity and a refreshing citrus-driven finish.

For anyone who enjoys Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but wants something slightly less tropical and more mineral, this is an excellent alternative. There's plenty of aromatic intensity, but the emphasis is on lime, grapefruit, freshness and subtle herbs rather than overtly sweet tropical fruit.

Clean, refreshing and extremely food-friendly, it's particularly good with seafood or simply served well chilled as an aperitif.

Description

Viña Leyda is one of the pioneering producers of Chile's Leyda Valley, a small, distinctly coastal wine region within the San Antonio Valley. The estate's vineyards are situated approximately 4–12km from the Pacific Ocean, where the strong maritime influence creates a significantly cooler growing environment than many of Chile's inland wine regions.

These cool conditions are particularly well suited to Sauvignon Blanc, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually while retaining the naturally high acidity and aromatic intensity that give the variety its refreshing character.

The Reserva is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, with the emphasis firmly on preserving the purity of the fruit and expressing its coastal origin. The 2021 is mineral, aromatic and fresh, combining white and citrus fruits with subtle herbaceous notes and a crisp, juicy palate.

Style

This is a light-bodied, dry and very refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, with plenty of citrus fruit and a crisp, mouth-watering finish.

Compared with a typical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, it's generally less about passionfruit and overt tropical flavours and more about lime, grapefruit, fresh herbs and minerality. It's still aromatic and immediately approachable, but feels slightly leaner and more restrained.

If you enjoy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé, this sits nicely between them stylistically – plenty of fruit and freshness, but with a distinctly cool-climate, coastal character.

  • Nose: Fresh and highly aromatic, with lime, mandarin and grapefruit alongside white fruit and subtle notes of fresh herbs and cut grass. A distinct mineral quality gives the wine additional freshness and complexity.
  • Palate: Crisp, lively and juicy, with citrus fruit at the forefront. Bright acidity gives the wine plenty of energy, while its cool-climate character keeps everything clean, precise and refreshing.
  • Finish: Fresh and persistent, with lingering citrus, subtle herbs and a clean mineral edge.
  • Fresh Oysters – Crisp acidity and minerality are ideal with fresh shellfish.
  • Grilled Prawns – Citrus freshness complements sweet, delicate seafood.
  • White Fish – The clean, vibrant style won't overpower lighter fish dishes.
  • Goat's Cheese – Bright acidity cuts beautifully through creamy, tangy cheese.
  • Sushi & Sashimi – Fresh citrus and mineral notes complement delicate raw fish.
  • Fresh Salads – Herbal flavours work naturally with green vegetables and lighter dressings.
  • Serve well chilled at 7–10°C – the producer's recommended serving range.
  • No decanting required – simply open and serve chilled.
  • Use a medium white wine glass to allow its citrus and herbal aromas to develop.
  • Drink now – the 2021 is best enjoyed for its freshness rather than kept for extended ageing.
