Maison Sichel Pomerol 2022

Regular price £31.95

A supple and polished Pomerol with plum, black fruit, velvety texture, and quiet depth. Smooth, generous, and distinctly Right Bank.

Since 1883, the Sichel family has been at the heart of Bordeaux’s fine‑wine trade, crafting and selecting wines that reflect the region’s most celebrated appellations. Their close relationships with top estates and deep understanding of Bordeaux terroir allow them to offer authentic expressions of each commune - including the jewel of the Right Bank, Pomerol.

The 2022 vintage in Pomerol favoured elegance over power. Cooler conditions and a later harvest delivered fruit with bright aromatics, vibrant acidity, and pure varietal character.

The blend - Merlot-led with Cabernet Franc and a touch of Malbec - opens with aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, and cassis, lifted by violet and lilac perfume. Gentle oak aging adds notes of vanilla, mocha, and spice, while the palate is silky, medium‑bodied, and refined, with fine‑grained tannins and a lingering, graceful finish.

Approachable now with a brief decant, this wine will evolve beautifully over the next decade, developing the truffle, cocoa, and forest‑floor notes for which Pomerol is renowned.

It is a textbook expression of the appellation’s elegance, crafted by one of Bordeaux’s most respected family producers.

Description

Maison Sichel Pomerol is built around the qualities that make the appellation so admired: Merlot-led richness, plush texture, and an ability to combine depth with immediate charm. Pomerol’s clay-rich soils are especially well suited to Merlot, and even when a wine is not from one of the appellation’s famous elite estates, the area’s signature profile tends to come through clearly in the glass.

Maison Sichel’s interpretation aims to show that classic Pomerol softness and breadth in an accessible way. Merlot forms the heart of the blend, typically supported by Cabernet Franc and sometimes a small portion of other traditional Bordeaux varieties, which bring lift and additional structure. The 2022 vintage in Bordeaux was fresher and more classically proportioned than hotter years, so the wine combines roundness with a slightly brighter line of acidity and definition.

That makes this a useful example of Pomerol for those looking for richness without jamminess. It has the expected smoothness and dark fruit, but there is also enough freshness to keep it elegant rather than heavy.

Style

A dry, medium- to full-bodied red that feels rounder and more velvety than Left Bank Bordeaux of similar level. The tannins are present, but soft in contour, and the wine opens more easily in youth than firmer Cabernet-led styles.

Because 2021 carries a little more freshness than some richer recent Bordeaux vintages, the wine feels balanced and composed rather than broad or overly lush.

In simple terms: a smooth, Merlot-led Bordeaux with real polish — generous and silky, but still classical and food-friendly.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with purple reflections.
  • Nose: Plum, blackberry, black cherry, violet, and soft cedar.
  • Palate: Rounded dark fruit with cocoa, subtle earth, and gentle spice.
  • Texture: Medium- to full-bodied with velvety tannins.
  • Finish: Smooth, polished, and persistent.
  • Overall Impression: A well-judged, approachable Pomerol that captures the appellation’s hallmark softness and depth without excess weight.
  • Roast Pork – A very good match for Merlot-led Bordeaux with supple tannins.
  • Duck Breast – The wine’s plush texture and dark fruit work naturally with duck.
  • Beef Wellington – Its smooth structure suits richer pastry-wrapped beef dishes.
  • Mushroom Dishes – Earthy ingredients echo the wine’s undergrowth and cocoa notes.
  • Brie de Meaux or Soft-Rinded Cheeses – Creamier cheeses pair well with the wine’s velvety texture.
  • Serve at 16–18°C for the best balance of fruit and savoury detail.
  • A short decant of 30–45 minutes will help the bouquet open and smooth the palate further.
  • Use a large Bordeaux glass or a generously shaped all-purpose red wine glass.
  • Drink now and over the next 6–9 years for a balance of softness and development.
