Meerlust Chardonnay 2023
A refined Stellenbosch Chardonnay with citrus, peach, oatmeal, and mineral freshness. Textured, elegant, and beautifully balanced.
The Meerlust Chardonnay is a superb expression of one of South Africa’s most revered estates. Situated on the granite-rich slopes just south of Stellenbosch, Meerlust Estate has been in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756, with over 250 years of dedication to excellence and heritage-driven winemaking. Sourced from two distinct vineyards - Compagniesdrift’s sun-drenched hills and the cool, windswept Quarry site - this Chardonnay showcases the best of both terroirs.
The 2024 vintage is beautifully poised, offering a vibrant bouquet of apricot, citrus, pear, and toasted almonds, supported by crisp acidity, subtle minerality, and a touch of oak finesse.
Fermented in a blend of new and seasoned French oak barrels, with a small portion in concrete to enhance freshness, it strikes a perfect balance between richness and restraint. The result is a medium-bodied, dry white wine that’s both expressive in youth and capable of graceful aging.
This is not just a Chardonnay - it’s a reflection of Meerlust’s centuries-old commitment to producing world-class wines that capture the soul of Stellenbosch’s coastal vineyards.
Meerlust Chardonnay comes from one of Stellenbosch’s most respected historic estates, where coastal breezes and a relatively cool maritime influence help Chardonnay retain freshness and aromatic poise. While the estate is best known internationally for Rubicon, its white wines are increasingly recognised for their balance of fruit purity, oak discipline, and classic structure.
This is a Chardonnay that aims for precision rather than excess. The 2024 vintage shows bright citrus and stone fruit, supported by fine oak and lees work that add breadth and complexity without pushing the wine into a heavily buttery or sweet-oaked style. That balance is particularly important in South African Chardonnay, where the best examples combine New World fruit clarity with more restrained, Old World-informed structure.
Meerlust’s version sits comfortably in that premium category. It has generosity, but also line and mineral freshness, making it much more than a simple ripe-fruit Chardonnay.
A dry, medium-bodied white with a gently creamy texture and well-integrated oak. It has more weight and complexity than a crisp, stainless-steel Chardonnay, but remains fresh and composed rather than rich or heavy.
The style will appeal to those who want a proper Chardonnay with texture and subtle barrel influence, but who do not want anything overblown. In simple terms: polished, textural Chardonnay — ripe enough to satisfy, but precise enough to stay elegant.
- Appearance: Bright pale gold with green highlights.
- Nose: Citrus, quince, peach, oatmeal, and light vanilla.

- Grilled Sea Bass – The wine has enough texture for fish with a little richness.
- Roast Chicken – A very natural pairing for Chardonnay of this style.
- Creamy Mushroom Pasta – The wine’s leesy texture works well with creamy sauces.
- Scallops – The combination of freshness and subtle oak is excellent with scallops.
- Soft-Rinded Cheeses – Brie-style cheeses complement the wine’s rounded texture beautifully.
- Serve at 10–12°C to let both the fruit and the texture show properly.
- No decant is required, but a few minutes in the glass helps the wine open.
- Use a medium to large white wine glass rather than a narrow aromatic glass.
- Drink now for freshness and texture, or over the next 4–6 years as the wine gains further nutty complexity.
