Regular price £32.00

An iconic Stellenbosch Bordeaux blend with cassis, plum, cedar, and graphite. Structured, complex, and one of South Africa’s benchmark reds.

A timeless South African icon, the Meerlust Rubicon 2022 is the latest release from one of the Cape’s most historic and revered wine estates. Located just 15 km from False Bay, Meerlust Estate has been in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756, producing wines of classical structure and age-worthy finesse for over eight generations.

Crafted under the skilled guidance of winemaker Wim Truter, the 2022 Rubicon is a masterful Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, capturing the essence of Meerlust’s unique terroir in the renowned Stellenbosch region.

This vintage is a standout: elegant, powerful, and supremely refined, with aromas of violets, dark berries, cedar, and spice. The palate is rich and layered, showing polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. Aged for 18 months in French oak, it offers both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.

Rubicon is more than a wine - it’s a symbol of South Africa’s commitment to fine wine tradition, innovation, and excellence. The 2022 vintage is already being hailed as one of the finest in the estate’s recent history.

A must-have for collectors, Bordeaux lovers, and those seeking the pinnacle of Cape winemaking.

Description

One of South Africa’s landmark Bordeaux-style blends and a wine that has long helped define the upper tier of Stellenbosch red wine. Meerlust’s estate lies close enough to the coast to benefit from maritime moderation, which helps preserve freshness and aromatic detail even in a warm climate. That balance between ripeness and restraint is one of the estate’s signatures.

Rubicon is built on the classic Bordeaux trio of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon usually taking the lead. The style is never about copying Bordeaux literally; rather, it uses the structure and vocabulary of Bordeaux to express Stellenbosch fruit, light maritime salinity, and the estate’s own age-worthy house style. In 2022, the wine shows especially strong balance, with the fruit ripe and dark-fruited, but still tightly framed and composed.

For those familiar with serious Bordeaux blends, Rubicon makes immediate sense. For those new to it, this is one of the clearest examples of why Stellenbosch is taken so seriously for premium red wine: depth, structure, freshness, and real cellaring potential in one bottle.

Style

A dry, full-bodied red with a firm, classical structure. It is not designed as a soft, fruit-bomb style; it has tannic backbone, aromatic complexity, and the kind of shape that rewards decanting and ageing.

Even so, it is not severe. The fruit is generous enough to support the structure, and the overall feel is polished rather than hard. In simple terms: a serious, cellar-worthy red that combines Bordeaux-like structure with distinctive Stellenbosch depth and energy.

  • Appearance: Opaque deep ruby.
  • Nose: Cassis, plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, and cigar box.
  • Palate: Dense dark fruit layered with spice, mineral detail, and oak complexity.
  • Texture: Full-bodied with firm, refined tannins.
  • Finish: Long, savoury, and highly persistent.
  • Overall Impression: A benchmark Stellenbosch blend that delivers depth, structure, and unmistakable premium-class character.
  • Roast Beef – A classic match for a Cabernet-led blend of this stature.
  • Lamb Shoulder – The wine’s structure and savoury detail are ideal with slow-cooked lamb.
  • Venison – A strong pairing for the wine’s graphite, cedar, and dark fruit character.
  • Aged Cheddar or Comté – Hard cheeses suit its tannin and complexity well.
  • Mushroom and Truffle Dishes – Earthy notes in the dish bring out the wine’s deeper savoury side.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to balance the fruit and structure.
  • Decant for at least 60 minutes before serving; longer can be beneficial when young.
  • Use a large Bordeaux-style glass.
  • Approachable now with air, but it should age confidently for 10–15 years under proper cellar conditions.
