Mitolo “Angela” Shiraz 2020
A polished and expressive Shiraz with ripe dark fruit, spice, and a sleek modern finish. Plush, stylish, and unmistakably Australian.
The Angela Shiraz is named in honour of Angela Mitolo, the matriarch of the Mitolo family, whose warmth and strength embody the spirit of the estate. It is a wine that reflects both the heritage of a proud Italian-Australian family and the unique character of McLaren Vale, one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions.
The fruit is sourced exclusively from the Sandra’s Block vineyard in Aldinga, where deep clay loam soils mixed with gravel and the moderating influence of the nearby Gulf St Vincent provide an ideal environment for Shiraz of both richness and finesse. These conditions, coupled with meticulous vineyard management, deliver grapes of exceptional flavour concentration balanced by natural acidity.
In the glass, the Angela Shiraz 2020 is immediately expressive, with lifted notes of blueberry, plum, and raspberry framed by clove, pepper, and hints of vanilla. The palate is medium to full-bodied yet refined, unfolding layers of juicy fruit, savoury herbs, and subtle earthy undertones. Silky tannins and bright acidity provide structure and energy, leading to a long, harmonious finish.
This wine captures the duality of McLaren Vale Shiraz: the generosity of ripe, sun-drenched fruit married with freshness, elegance, and savoury complexity. While accessible and delicious in its youth, it also has the capacity to evolve gracefully over the next decade, developing deeper savoury and earthy nuances with time in bottle.
Mitolo “Angela” Shiraz comes from McLaren Vale, a region particularly well suited to generous, dark-fruited Shiraz with warmth and texture, but which can also produce wines of polish and freshness when handled with care. Mitolo’s house style tends toward modern richness and smoothness, but the better bottlings keep enough structure to avoid feeling simplistic.
“Angela” sits in that appealing zone: ripe and glossy enough to satisfy fans of contemporary Australian Shiraz, but not so overdone that it loses detail. McLaren Vale fruit often brings a darker, fleshier profile than cooler-climate Shiraz, with more plum richness and savoury chocolate-like depth, and those traits are very much in evidence here.
A dry, full-bodied red with broad dark fruit, soft but present tannins, and a polished, modern mouthfeel. It is richer and more velvety than peppery cool-climate Shiraz, but still balanced enough to stay composed.
