Pegasus Bay Chardonnay 2020
A rich, layered Chardonnay with citrus, stone fruit, toast, and bottle-aged complexity. Textural, serious, and beautifully complete.
The Pegasus Bay Chardonnay 2020 is a striking expression of Waipara Valley terroir, crafted by the Donaldson family, pioneers of North Canterbury winemaking since the 1970s. Known for producing wines of power and longevity, Pegasus Bay takes inspiration from Burgundian traditions, applying them with a distinctly New Zealand touch to create Chardonnay of richness, depth, and precision.
Hand-picked fruit from mature vines is gently pressed, then fermented and aged in French oak barriques (a portion new) with extended lees contact and partial malolactic fermentation. The result is a wine of great complexity, where ripe stone fruit, melon, and citrus zest intertwine with vanilla pod, toasted oak, and buttered popcorn, lifted by a distinctive flinty, smoky minerality. On the palate, a creamy, textural richness is balanced by bright acidity, creating a wine that is both full-bodied and elegant.
The 2020 vintage is generous yet finely tuned, offering immediate appeal but also the structure to reward patient cellaring. With time, its vibrant fruit will evolve into layers of honey, hazelnut, and toasty nuance, confirming its reputation as one of New Zealand’s most age-worthy Chardonnays.
Pegasus Bay Chardonnay comes from one of New Zealand’s most respected family estates, a producer known for whites that combine generosity with structure and development potential. By 2020, this Chardonnay has had enough bottle age to move beyond simple fruit and oak into a more integrated, complete expression.
That evolution is especially valuable in Chardonnay, where time can knit together fruit, lees, and oak into something much more harmonious. The wine still shows ripe orchard and stone fruit, but also more savoury, nutty, and toasty tones that make it feel firmly premium and food-oriented.
This is a strong recommendation when they want a mature, serious New World Chardonnay with both richness and complexity, rather than a simple youthful fruit-driven style.
A dry, medium- to full-bodied white with ripe fruit, integrated oak, and notable textural depth. Bottle age gives it extra breadth and a more complete, savoury finish.
