The Crushed Grape

Peter Lehmann “The Barossan” Chardonnay 2022

Regular price £19.99

A generous Barossa Chardonnay with ripe orchard fruit, citrus, and subtle creamy oak. Smooth, satisfying, and more balanced than overtly buttery styles.

The 2022 Barossan Chardonnay represents a fresh and modern interpretation of the Barossa Valley, crafted under the respected Peter Lehmann Wines label. Known as the “Baron of the Barossa,” Peter Lehmann built his legacy by championing local growers and showcasing the richness of the region through wines of character, balance, and integrity. This Chardonnay continues that story, offering a white wine that reflects both the generosity of the Barossa and the precision of contemporary winemaking.

The Barossa Valley is best known for its Shiraz, but its ancient soils and varied microclimates also produce Chardonnay of surprising vibrancy and depth. Sourced from carefully selected vineyard sites, the 2022 vintage captures the warmth of the Barossa sun while maintaining freshness, creating a wine that balances ripe fruit richness with elegant structure.

In the glass, the Barossan Chardonnay 2022 reveals enticing aromas of peach, nectarine, and apricot, layered with pineapple, melon, and honeysuckle. Subtle oak influence lends delicate hints of vanilla and almond spice, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit. The palate is generous yet refined, showing juicy stone fruit and tropical layers supported by bright citrus acidity and a smooth, lightly creamy texture. The finish is crisp and lingering, with a touch of nutty spice.

Approachable in its youth yet structured enough to evolve over the next 3–5 years, this wine captures the duality of the Barossa – power and generosity balanced by finesse and freshness.

Description

Peter Lehmann “The Barossan” Chardonnay 2022 takes a region more famous for powerful reds and shows that Barossa can also deliver full-flavoured, confident whites when fruit ripeness is handled with care. Warm days build generous fruit, while modern cellar work keeps the wine from tipping into heaviness. The result is a Chardonnay that feels distinctly Australian in flavour generosity, but still composed and polished.

This sits very much in the crowd-pleasing premium Chardonnay category: enough ripeness and texture to satisfy customers who enjoy fuller whites, yet enough freshness to remain useful at the table. It is less mineral and taut than cool-climate Chardonnay, but also less exaggerated than very buttery, heavily oaked examples.

Style

A dry, medium- to full-bodied white with rounded texture, ripe fruit, and softly integrated oak. It offers more palate weight than crisp stainless-steel Chardonnay, but stays balanced by citrus freshness rather than becoming broad or oily.

In simple terms: a richer Australian Chardonnay — smooth, orchard-fruited, and gently creamy, but still tidy enough to work with food.

  • Appearance: Pale gold with bright reflections.
  • Nose: Apple, peach, lemon curd, vanilla, and light toast.
  • Palate: Ripe orchard fruit with gentle creaminess and citrus freshness.
  • Texture: Medium- to full-bodied with smooth, rounded balance.
  • Finish: Polished, fresh enough, and lightly persistent.
  • Overall Impression: A generous but well-controlled Australian Chardonnay with broad appeal and solid food versatility.
  • Roast Chicken – A natural pairing for rounded Chardonnay with subtle oak.
  • Salmon – Works well with richer fish and buttery sauces.
  • Creamy Pasta – The wine’s texture handles cream-based dishes comfortably.
  • Pork with Apple – Fruit and gentle oak are especially well suited here.
  • Soft-Rinded Cheese – Brie and similar cheeses complement its smooth palate.
  • Serve at 10–12°C to allow both fruit and texture to show properly.
  • No decanting required, though a few minutes in the glass helps it open.
  • Use a medium to large white wine glass.
  • Best enjoyed over the next 2–4 years.
