Description

Zolla Primitivo di Manduria hails from the acclaimed Primitivo di Manduria DOC in Puglia, the sun-soaked “heel” of Italy’s boot. This historic wine region is renowned for producing powerful, fruit-forward wines from Primitivo, a grape genetically identical to Zinfandel but with distinctly Mediterranean character - abundant ripe fruit, soft tannins, and warm spice.

Primitivo thrives in Manduria’s hot, dry climate and limestone-rich soils, where abundant sunshine encourages full ripeness and concentrated flavour. The grapes for Zolla are sourced from vineyards that benefit from both intense daytime warmth and cooling breezes from nearby seas, which help preserve natural acidity and balance.

Produced by a respected local estate focused on showcasing the authenticity of Puglian terroir, Zolla Primitivo di Manduria reflects regional intensity, generosity, and approachability, making it a standout example of this bold and charismatic style.

Style

A dry, full-bodied Primitivo with blackberry fruit, warming spice, and plush texture. The wine is rich and concentrated, but polished enough to avoid feeling overly sweet or heavy.

In simple terms: a classic premium Primitivo — bold, silky, and deeply satisfying for customers who enjoy fuller-bodied reds.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with violet hues.
  • Nose: Ripe blackberry, plum, and black cherry with hints of bramble, spice, and subtle Mediterranean herbs.
  • Palate: Concentrated dark fruit balanced by warm spice, gentle earthiness, and integrated oak nuances.
  • Texture: Plush, velvety tannins with balanced acidity providing lift and cohesion.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and persistent with lingering fruit, spice, and a touch of savoury richness.
  • Overall Impression: A powerful and expressive expression of Primitivo di Manduria - bold, generous, and characterful with classic Mediterranean intensity.
  • Barbecued Short Ribs or Grilled Steak – Rich, charred flavours match the wine’s dark fruit and spice intensity.
  • Braised Lamb Shanks – Slow-cooked meat complements the wine’s plush tannins and depth.
  • Tomato-Based Pasta (Arrabbiata or Amatriciana) – Acidity balances tomato richness while enhancing spice layers.
  • Spiced Sausages with Peppers – Savoury spice and warmth echo the wine’s fruit and peppery notes.
  • Aged Pecorino or Sharp Cheddar – Salty, firm cheeses elevate fruit concentration and soften tannins.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to allow the wine’s rich fruit and spice layers to express themselves fully.
  • A decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the velvety tannins.
  • Use a large-bowl red wine glass to encourage aeration and showcase the depth of flavour and aromatic complexity.
  • This vintage is delicious now and will continue to carry structure and finesse over the next 4–6 years if stored in cool, stable conditions.
