Founded in 1877 in Haro, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia remains one of Rioja's most historic family-owned bodegas.
Renowned for its steadfast commitment to traditional winemaking, the estate employs extended barrel ageing, manual racking and prolonged bottle maturation, preserving practices that have become increasingly uncommon in modern wine production.
Its Viña Tondonia wines are particularly admired for their distinctive character, remarkable longevity and ability to develop extraordinary complexity over time.
The 2000 growing season presented challenges, including spring frosts and uneven grape maturation. Nevertheless, patient harvesting enabled the estate to achieve healthy, fully ripened fruit of excellent quality.
The wine was produced from 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Viura, all sourced from the estate's own vineyards.
Matured for four years in oak barrels with twice-yearly manual racking, the wine was subsequently bottled without filtration and allowed to develop further complexity through extended bottle ageing.
Production was limited to approximately 25,000 bottles.
