2019Rijk’s Reserve Pinotage 2019 comes from Tulbagh, a South African region that can produce Pinotage of both richness and structure thanks to its warm days, cool nights, and mountain-framed vineyards. Rijk’s is one of the producers most closely associated with premium Pinotage, and their Reserve bottling is designed to show the grape at a more serious, age-worthy level.
That matters because Pinotage is sometimes misunderstood. In less careful hands it can become rustic or overly sweet-toned, but in top examples it can deliver dark fruit, spice, firm but polished tannins, and a very distinctive South African identity.
The 2019 vintage gives the wine excellent concentration, and the élevage brings depth and oak complexity without obscuring the varietal character.
