Rustenberg Chardonnay 2024
A poised and quietly rich Chardonnay with citrus, stone fruit, and restrained oak polish. Textured, balanced, and beautifully composed.
Crafted on one of South Africa’s oldest and most esteemed wine estates, the Rustenberg Chardonnay is a benchmark expression of Stellenbosch’s cool-climate elegance. With winemaking roots dating back to 1682, Rustenberg combines centuries of tradition with modern precision, consistently producing wines of character and finesse from its high-altitude vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain.
This vintage is made from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay, fermented with wild yeasts in French oak barrels and matured on lees for added texture and complexity. The result is a beautifully balanced wine, with vibrant notes of apricot, orange zest, and citrus, enriched by hints of marzipan, toasted coconut, and gentle oak spice. Full malolactic fermentation and careful oak aging bring richness and roundness, while preserving the wine’s fresh acidity and mineral backbone.
Elegant and expressive, this is a classic barrel-fermented Chardonnay that captures the unique terroir of Stellenbosch and the legacy of one of the Cape’s great estates.
Rustenberg Chardonnay comes from Stellenbosch fruit grown in conditions that allow Chardonnay to combine ripeness with freshness. In the Cape, Chardonnay can easily become too broad if grown in the wrong place or handled too heavily, but at Rustenberg the style is generally more measured: fruit ripeness supported by acidity, with oak used to add texture rather than dominate.
The estate’s approach aims for a wine with breadth and complexity, but without losing line. That gives the Chardonnay more seriousness than simple stainless-steel examples, while avoiding the heavy, buttery style that can obscure place and variety.
In 2024, the balance works well. The wine shows enough fruit generosity to satisfy those who enjoy richer Chardonnay, yet remains fresh and controlled enough for those who prefer a more polished, gastronomic profile.
A dry, medium-bodied white with a gently rounded texture and clear structural freshness. It has more weight than a crisp, citrus-led everyday white, but it is not overblown, creamy, or overly oaked.
The style is best understood as modern-classical Chardonnay: subtle oak, ripe fruit, and enough acidity to keep everything in proportion. In simple terms: richer than Chablis, more restrained than buttery New World Chardonnay, and very easy to place on a smart restaurant list.

- Creamy Mushroom Risotto – The gentle oak and rounded feel pair very naturally here.
- Pork with Apple – Fruit and acidity make this an excellent match.
- Soft-Rinded Cheeses – Brie and similar cheeses work well with the wine’s texture.
- Serve at 10–12°C to preserve freshness while allowing texture to show.
- No decanting is necessary, though a few minutes in the glass helps the aromatics open.
- Use a medium to large white wine glass.
- Best enjoyed over the next 3–5 years while fruit and oak remain in harmony.
