Rustenberg John x Merriman 2024

Regular price £20.99

A polished Stellenbosch Bordeaux blend with cassis, dark plum, cedar, and finely judged structure. Classical, composed, and quietly powerful.

Named in honour of John Xavier Merriman, the last prime minister of the Cape Colony and former owner of Rustenberg, this wine pays tribute to a legacy of visionary stewardship and fine winemaking. Produced on one of Stellenbosch’s oldest wine estates, Rustenberg has been cultivating vines on its historic slopes since 1682, consistently crafting wines of classic elegance and enduring quality.

The 2024 vintage is a refined Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, all grown on the estate’s mountain foothill vineyards. Deeply expressive yet restrained, it offers aromas of cassis, plum, violets, and tobacco, with a palate that is structured, polished, and built to age. Subtle oak influence adds complexity without overshadowing the vibrant fruit and savoury depth.

Description

Rustenberg John X Merriman comes from Stellenbosch, the historic heartland of South African fine wine and one of the country’s strongest regions for Bordeaux-inspired reds. The estate lies on the slopes of the Simonsberg, where altitude, cooling ocean influence, and decomposed granite soils help produce wines with both ripe fruit and structural freshness. That balance is central to why Stellenbosch can deliver Cabernet-led blends with such convincing depth and restraint.

Named after John Xavier Merriman, a former owner of the estate and an important figure in the Cape’s political and viticultural history, this bottling is intended as a classic house red rather than a flashy flagship. It is typically led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties, giving the wine a framework of dark fruit, savoury detail, and polished tannin rather than simple generosity.

In 2024, that philosophy works particularly well. The vintage profile gives the wine clarity and ripeness, but the finished style remains measured and classically proportioned. This is not a sweet-fruited, heavily oaked Cape blend; it is a serious, well-made Stellenbosch red that rewards both the Bordeaux drinker and the customer looking to trade up from simpler New World reds.

Style

A dry, medium- to full-bodied red with a clearly structured, Cabernet-led profile. It has more shape and backbone than many modern fruit-forward blends, yet the tannins are refined enough to make it enjoyable now with air.

The wine sits in a very attractive middle ground: traditional enough to feel serious and cellar-worthy, but polished enough to drink without years of patience. In simple terms: a proper Bordeaux-style Stellenbosch red — firm, balanced, and confidently classic rather than showy.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with dark purple concentration.
  • Nose: Cassis, black plum, cedar, graphite, and light tobacco.
  • Palate: Layered dark fruit framed by savoury oak and mineral complexity.
  • Texture: Medium- to full-bodied with fine, structured tannins.
  • Finish: Long, dry, and composed with classic Cabernet grip.
  • Overall Impression: A convincing and polished Stellenbosch Bordeaux blend that combines structure, elegance, and real drinkability.
  • Roast Beef – The wine’s Cabernet structure and savoury detail are ideal with classic roast beef.
  • Lamb with Rosemary – Herbal notes in the dish bring out the cedar and dark-fruited depth of the wine.
  • Beef Wellington – The wine has enough polish and structure to handle richer, more formal dishes.
  • Mushroom-Based Dishes – Earthy flavours draw out the graphite and tobacco nuances.
  • Aged Hard Cheeses – Mature cheddar, Comté, or Gouda soften the tannins and highlight the fruit core.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to show both the wine’s fruit depth and its structural detail.
  • Decant for 45–60 minutes before serving to allow the aromatics to unfold fully.
  • Use a large Bordeaux-style red wine glass for the best balance of lift, texture, and detail.
  • Drink now with air, or cellar for a further 6–10 years in cool, stable conditions.
