The Crushed Grape

Spice Route Chenin Blanc 2021

Regular price £15.99

A textured Swartland Chenin with orchard fruit, quince, citrus, and a subtle waxy-mineral edge. Fresh, characterful, and distinctly South African.

Crafted from dryland bush vines rooted in the granite-rich soils of South Africa’s Swartland region, Spice Route Chenin Blanc 2021 is a bold and expressive white that reflects both the character of the land and the vision of its pioneering producer.

Spice Route Winery, established by trailblazer Charles Back, has long championed the potential of Swartland terroir - a rugged, sun-drenched region known for producing wines with intensity, texture, and authenticity. This Chenin Blanc exemplifies that spirit.

Bursting with aromas of ripe peach, pineapple, and citrus blossom, it unfolds on the palate with generous layers of tropical fruit, creamy texture, and a streak of flinty minerality. The result is a wine that balances richness and freshness, offering both immediate appeal and the complexity to pair with a wide range of dishes.

A standout example of South African Chenin Blanc, this vintage is a tribute to old vines, minimal intervention, and a region redefining quality on its own terms.

Description

Spice Route Chenin Blanc comes from Swartland, a region that has become one of South Africa’s most important homes for expressive, character-driven Chenin Blanc. The dry climate, old-vine tradition, and emphasis on site expression have helped define a Swartland style that often balances ripe fruit with savoury detail, texture, and a more natural sense of structure than many simple aromatic whites.

Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s most important white grape, and in the right hands it can offer remarkable versatility. Spice Route’s interpretation sits in the richer, more textured end of the spectrum without losing freshness. The 2021 vintage brings ripe fruit, but the wine remains shaped by citrus acidity and a faintly flinty, mineral edge that keeps it from becoming broad or sweet-feeling.

This is exactly the kind of white that works for those who want more interest than a basic crisp white can offer, but who are not looking for overt oak or heavy richness. It has personality, shape, and enough freshness to stay very versatile at the table.

Style

A dry, medium-bodied white with more texture than a light, simple aperitif wine. It carries ripe fruit and a slightly waxy breadth typical of Chenin, but the acidity stays present enough to keep the wine lively and food-friendly.

It is therefore neither lean nor creamy. Instead, it sits in a very appealing middle ground: generous, textured, and expressive, but still fresh. In simple terms: a modern South African Chenin with substance — more serious than easy-drinking supermarket styles, but still approachable and versatile.

  • Appearance: Pale straw with light gold hints.
  • Nose: Pear, quince, peach, citrus, and a faint waxy-mineral note.
  • Palate: Orchard fruit with Chenin texture, lemony freshness, and savoury lift.
  • Texture: Medium-bodied with gentle breadth and crisp acidity.
  • Finish: Clean, persistent, and lightly mineral.
  • Overall Impression: A very good Swartland Chenin that combines texture, freshness, and regional character in a confident, food-friendly style.
  • Roast Chicken – The wine’s texture stands up well to simple roast poultry.
  • Grilled White Fish – Fresh enough for fish, but with enough body to handle a richer preparation.
  • Pork with Apple – Chenin’s fruit and acidity are excellent with pork.
  • Salads with Goat’s Cheese – The wine’s freshness and texture both work here.
  • Creamy Vegetable Dishes – Its structure allows it to pair well beyond light starter dishes.
  • Serve at 9–11°C so the texture shows without muting the freshness.
  • No decant is required, though a few minutes in the glass helps the wine broaden.
  • Use a medium to large white wine glass.
  • Drink now and over the next 3–5 years while fruit and texture remain in good balance.
