A bold and beautifully layered Swartland red with ripe dark fruit, savoury spice, and polished power. Generous, distinctive, and highly crowd-pleasing.

Crafted by the acclaimed Boekenhoutskloof winery in South Africa’s Franschhoek Valley, The Chocolate Block is a testament to both innovation and heritage. This bold, Rhône-style red blend showcases the winery’s mastery of Syrah-led wines and their commitment to expressing the character of the Western Cape’s diverse terroirs.

Boekenhoutskloof - one of South Africa’s most respected producers - has built a global following for The Chocolate Block, a wine that artfully balances rich, dark fruit, mocha-spice complexity, and elegant structure. Sourced from select vineyards across Swartland and beyond, this vintage is driven by 77% Syrah, supported by Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Viognier, each variety adding layers of flavour and finesse.

Description

The Chocolate Block is one of South Africa’s most recognisable modern reds, built around Swartland fruit and a Rhône-influenced, Syrah-led blend. Swartland’s old vines, dry-farmed conditions, and warm Mediterranean climate produce fruit with natural concentration and savoury intensity, while the better sites still hold onto enough freshness to keep the wines from becoming heavy.

Although the label has become iconic, the wine’s success is not simply about branding. It works because the blend is carefully judged: Syrah provides dark fruit, spice, and olive-like savoury character, while supporting varieties add fragrance, breadth, and lift. The result is richer and more dramatic than straightforward varietal bottlings, but it remains more disciplined than many high-impact New World blends.

In 2023, The Chocolate Block shows the style that made it famous: plush fruit, plenty of spice, and a smooth, generous palate, yet enough structure and savoury complexity to keep it from tasting sweet or simplistic. It is immediately appealing, but not one-dimensional.

Style

A dry, full-bodied red with broad fruit, soft but present tannins, and a polished, generous mouthfeel. It delivers intensity and richness, but the style is more layered than bluntly powerful.

This is the kind of red that feels luxurious and expressive without becoming tiring. It has enough polish to drink on its own, but also enough depth to work well at the table. In simple terms: a bold, modern Swartland blend — rich, spicy, and charismatic, but still properly put together.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with purple-black depth.
  • Nose: Blackberry, plum, spice, cocoa, and dried herbs.
  • Palate: Dense dark fruit layered with pepper, mocha, and savoury complexity.
  • Texture: Full-bodied with smooth, polished tannins.
  • Finish: Long, warming, and gently spiced.
  • Overall Impression: A highly successful modern South African blend that combines richness, spice, and real character.
  • Lamb Tagine – The wine’s spice and plush fruit are excellent with aromatic slow-cooked dishes.
  • Barbecue Beef – Smoky char and rich meat suit the wine’s generosity.
  • Pork Belly – The wine’s spice and dark fruit work beautifully with richer cuts.
  • Moroccan-Spiced Dishes – A natural fit for the wine’s layered savoury character.
  • Hard Cheeses – Mature Gouda or aged cheddar both work very well.
  • Serve at 16–18°C to show both fruit breadth and savoury detail.
  • Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving.
  • Use a large red wine glass to let the bouquet and texture unfold properly.
  • Drink now and over the next 5–8 years while fruit and structure remain in strong balance.
