The Chocolate Block 2022 Magnum

Regular price £53.99

A magnum-format release of this iconic Swartland blend, offering the same dark-fruited richness, savoury spice, and polished depth in a format ideal for the table and cellar.

Boekenhoutskloof - one of South Africa’s most respected producers - has built a global following for The Chocolate Block, a wine that artfully balances rich, dark fruit, mocha-spice complexity, and elegant structure. Sourced from select vineyards across Swartland and beyond, this vintage is driven by 77% Syrah, supported by Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Viognier, each variety adding layers of flavour and finesse.

Smooth yet structured, expressive yet approachable, The Chocolate Block 2022 is not just a wine - it’s a signature of South African excellence and Boekenhoutskloof’s ongoing legacy of quality winemaking. Ideal for collectors, enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a wine with depth, style, and a strong sense of place.

Description

The Chocolate Block 2022 Magnum presents the same core wine as the standard bottling, but in a larger 1.5L format that is particularly attractive for entertaining and for slower, steadier maturation in bottle. The wine itself is built around Swartland fruit and a Syrah-led blend, drawing on old vines and dry-farmed sites that give natural concentration, savoury spice, and broad textural appeal.

The magnum format matters here because wines of this scale and style often benefit from the slower development that larger bottles encourage. That can preserve freshness and aromatic detail for longer, making the bottle as appealing to collectors of large-format restaurant wines as it is to customers simply wanting something impressive for a dinner table.

Stylistically, the wine retains everything that has made The Chocolate Block so successful: ripe dark fruit, a touch of cocoa and spice, and a smooth, composed feel through the palate. In magnum, it also gains extra theatre and better suitability for larger gatherings.

Style

A dry, full-bodied red with broad fruit, smooth structure, and a layered, modern Swartland profile. The larger bottle format does not change the style, but it does make the wine particularly well suited to drinking over a longer meal or cellaring with a little more confidence.

In practical terms, this is the same highly expressive, crowd-pleasing Chocolate Block, but in a more generous and more age-friendly format.

  • Appearance: Deep ruby with purple-black intensity.
  • Nose: Blackberry, plum, spice, cocoa, and dried herbs.
  • Palate: Plush dark fruit with savoury spice and polished depth.
  • Texture: Full-bodied with smooth, integrated tannins.
  • Finish: Long, warming, and expressive.
  • Overall Impression: A strong large-format expression of this iconic Swartland blend, ideal for both entertaining and short- to mid-term cellaring.
  • Large Roast Joints – Ideal for sharing with roast beef or lamb at a bigger table.
  • Barbecue Platters – The wine’s richness and spice work perfectly for group dining.
  • Lamb Tagine – Its layered savoury character handles aromatic spices very well.
  • Hard Cheeses – Excellent with mature cheeses as part of a long meal.
  • Celebratory Dinners – The magnum format is naturally suited to occasions where presentation matters.
  • Serve at 16–18°C.
  • Decant for 45–60 minutes, particularly because large-format bottles can take a little longer to open fully.
  • Use large red wine glasses and allow time in the glass.
  • Drink now with air, or cellar for 6–10 years in good conditions.
