Triennes Merlot 2020
A supple, fruit-forward Merlot with black cherry, cocoa, and Provençal warmth. Smooth, polished, and very approachable.
The Triennes Merlot 2020 is a fine example of how the warmth of the Mediterranean can meet the elegance of Burgundian craftsmanship. Domaine de Triennes, founded in 1989 by Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac and Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, was established with the vision of crafting wines that combine Provençal generosity with restraint and finesse. Today, that vision is beautifully realised in their varietal Merlot.
Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the Var, the 2020 vintage shows the richness of sun-ripened fruit with a natural freshness that gives the wine poise. In the glass, it reveals aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and dark berries, accented by Mediterranean herbs and a gentle touch of oak spice. The palate is supple and velvety, with layers of black fruit, hints of garrigue, and a polished texture supported by soft tannins. Balanced acidity brings lift, ensuring the wine remains lively and food-friendly.
Versatile and approachable, the Triennes Merlot 2020 pairs effortlessly with a wide range of dishes – from grilled lamb and roasted meats to ratatouille, mushroom risotto, and semi-hard cheeses. While immediately enjoyable for its plush fruit and rounded tannins, it also has the depth to age gracefully for up to five to seven years.
Triennes Merlot 2020 shows how well Merlot can work in the warmer south of France when the aim is softness, ripe fruit, and early drinkability. At Domaine de Triennes, the wine tends to combine southern fruit generosity with cleaner, more polished handling than one often finds in very simple Merlot bottlings.
The 2020 vintage gives the wine a little extra depth and plushness, making it especially attractive for customers who enjoy smooth reds without aggressive tannins. There is enough varietal identity here — dark fruit, cocoa, and gentle spice — but the overall emphasis is on comfort and flexibility rather than strict structure.
A dry, medium-bodied red with soft tannins, rounded fruit, and a smooth southern-French profile. It is more about ease and drinkability than about ageing or structure.
