Triennes Merlot 2022
A vivid, fruit-led Merlot with black fruit, liquorice, and smooth texture. Slightly brighter and fresher than the 2020, while still generous and easy-going.
The Triennes Merlot 2022 is a wine that captures the essence of Provence while carrying the finesse of Burgundy’s most distinguished winemaking traditions. Domaine de Triennes, founded in 1989 by Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac and Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, was created with a vision: to apply Burgundian precision to the generous terroirs of the Mediterranean. More than three decades later, that vision continues to define the domaine’s wines, with Merlot given a starring role in showcasing how varietal expression and terroir can work in harmony.
The 2022 vintage reveals Merlot at its most vibrant and polished. The warm Provençal climate delivers ripe black cherry, plum, and dark berry flavours, while the estate’s organic viticulture and restrained approach in the cellar ensure elegance and freshness. On the nose, the wine opens with juicy black fruits, gentle spice, and a hint of garrigue herbs, while the palate is supple and velvety, with refined tannins and a lively backbone of acidity. The finish is long and fruit-driven, with subtle herbal and spice notes that recall the estate’s sun-drenched hillsides.
This is a wine of both immediacy and potential: approachable and charming in its youth, yet structured enough to develop gracefully over the next 3–5 years. Its versatility at the table makes it ideal with grilled meats, Mediterranean vegetable dishes, mushroom risotto, and semi-hard cheeses.
Triennes Merlot 2022 follows the same soft, approachable house style, but the younger vintage gives the wine a slightly more lifted, fruit-forward feel than the 2020. Merlot in this Provençal setting works best when ripe fruit and smooth tannins are kept in balance by freshness, and that is very much the case here.
The result is a wine with broad consumer appeal: dark-fruited enough for Merlot lovers, but still lively and modern in feel. It remains a southern French red, but one shaped by polish and drinkability rather than rusticity.
A dry, medium-bodied red with ripe fruit, smooth tannins, and a bright, polished finish. It has a little more youthful energy than the 2020, but remains soft and very approachable.
