Unicum Liqueur
Unicum is Hungary’s iconic bitter herbal liqueur, created in 1790 from a secret blend of over 40 herbs, roots and spices and matured in oak casks. Bottled at 40% ABV, it delivers intense herbal bitterness, dark citrus, menthol and warming spice with long, complex finish - a bold, traditional digestif with true Central European character.
Historic, distinctive and proudly Hungarian, Unicum remains one of the world’s great amaros - unapologetically bitter, deeply aromatic and completely unique
Unicum is one of Europe’s oldest and most distinctive bitter herbal liqueurs — powerful, aromatic and unmistakably dry. Created in 1790, it is the national digestif of Hungary and a cornerstone of Central European drinking culture.
Built on a massive botanical profile with deep herbal bitterness, spice, citrus rind, and earthy roots, Unicum is bold, intense and entirely unique. The long oak maturation softens the spirit and adds richness and natural sweetness, giving Unicum complexity similar to fernet and other amaros, but with a signature Hungarian character.
Traditionally enjoyed after meals to aid digestion, it has become a symbol of Hungarian identity and an essential spirit for lovers of big, bitter flavours.
Unicum was created by Dr. József Zwack, Royal Physician to the Habsburg Emperor, who crafted a highly potent herbal tonic for medicinal use. The Emperor famously declared it “unicum” — meaning “unique” — which became the brand’s name.
The Zwack family’s distillery in Budapest still produces Unicum today, using:
✅ A secret recipe of over forty herbs
✅ Traditional wooden vat maceration
✅ Distillation and prolonged oak ageing
Through wars, nationalisation and rebirth, Unicum remains a symbol of Hungarian resilience and heritage.
